Boxer being left out in the cold...

This is one of the problems with a shelter (I know there is a need for shelters, they certinly save many dogs that go to good homes) as compared to a rescue, if they could do a home check they would see know that these people can't have an indoor dog, therefor should not be allowed to adopt a boxer. Most shelters atleast require a note form your landlord though. That poor baby. I wish you could make people sign a contract saying they won't leave thier dog outside and then take them away if they don't fulfill it!!

Angie you are that little boys angel sounds like he needs your help. keep up the good work, we boxer mommys need to stick together...SO :(

I know, and I just feel like going down there myself and demanding that they let me have him! If only it were that simple ! :(

We did make a report with animal control and they said that they would stop by there to check on him since we think he looks a little thin...and we also called our local animal shelter but they haven't had a full blooded brindle boxer for quite some time now so we don't think he came from there...I guess he could have came from any shelter really because they haven't lived in thier house very long...so who knows where they lived before moving to our neighborhood...

It's so frustrating because there's really not a lot we can do to help him.
My husband did leave the guy our phone number and told him that if he realizes he's not able to keep him and decides he wants to find a new home for him to give us a call....maybe he'll think about everything my husband said and call us...I can only hope :(

BREAKS my heart....if only we could save them all!! We had a similiar situation last winter....our friends neighbor had a boxer in a fenced in run and dog house...he is outside ALL THE TIME.....it broke my heart in the summer as it is so hot...but in the winter....it was all hubby could do to not let me go take him....I wanted to talk to the owners and then i just decided we were going to steal the dog one late night....I get SO upset and emotional....I know not everyone thinks of their pets the way 'we' do on here....i am often called 'crazy and obsessed' at work...BUT i would rather care and have all this love i get in return than to be cold hearted and not give a d---!
Maybe if you continue to express interest and perhaps share what you have to offer it will make a difference!

The poor baby has just got to be cold. It's been below 30 degrees the last couple of nights here, and cold and wet during the days. Are you in Indy or the metropolitan area? If so, we could come up with a list of local shelters in the surrounding counties to call. These people obviously did not adopt this boy from a rescue. Is he neutered? If not, he was likely adopted from a county type Humane Society, although most now have spay neuter contracts. At the very least, you might suggest to these people to use a heated bowl for water and consider heating both the shed and the dog house with brooder style heaters available at farm supply stores. And a bit heavier diet for this poor boy in the cold waether. The body must work harder to stay warm so more calories are needed.

i was also wondering if you were close to indianapolis. that makes me so mad that people get boxers and keep them outside they are not outside dogs and they need people contact...hopefully they will let him go in the "big house" or let somebody take him who will give him the home he deserves...please keep us posted on him...

tanya&jazz, I know what you mean, it's so sad that he is just left out there tied to that chain all day long...and what really makes me sad is that I have never once seen him inside his doghouse..he's just always standing there looking around like he's lonely :( Seeing that big chain as a collar makes me think of something some idiot would put on a pitbull :mad:

Holden's Mom, I'm not sure if he's neutered or not...when we first noticed him out there we stopped to get a good look at him, but I didn't notice if he was neutered...and when dh was down there today he didn't notice either...
our local shelter requires a spay/neuter agreement, I do know that...

When we drove past the house earlier this evening it looked like they had turned his dog house around the opposite way...maybe so he would be less noticable from the street...??...I hope they don't think that's going to keep us from keeping a close eye on him, because if they do they are so wrong!

I've always wondered why would anyone want a dog if they just tie it up in the back yard and never see the dog. What's the point? They passed a new law in St Paul Mn. It is illegal to chain up dogs and leave them there. This is for extreme cases where the dog never leaves that spot. They did it because dogs are social animals and if left there with no interaction they become aggressive. Thier still working on other cities to pass this law like Minneapolis. Maybe this will be a law that will become national. Good for you for doing something to try and help the boxer.

We just moved away from Lafayette, and I am pretty sure I know what shelter you are talking about.
They normally require permission from a landlord before adopting out a dog to a family that rents.

You could always wait another day or two and then go down there again and just offer to take the dog since it's so cold. Explain to them again that they just can NOT leave the poor baby outside in the cold. and if all else fails... STEAL HIM! :D

Logically you would think they would be willing to give the dog up, since they're not interacting with him and adding any value to thier lives but only draining thier pocketbook through food. But this is probably not the case, they will probably only become defensive and not give the dog to you. The fact that they moved the dog house isn't a good sign. But don't give up, this dog obvisously needs an friend. He is lucky to have a caring neighbor such as yourself.

Too bad you don't live here anymore--we could've gotten together and let our babies play!

I know exactly what you mean about the animal control here not being of much help -- I'd be surprised if they even went by that house to check on the boxer :rolleyes:

When we drove by earlier my husband saw that they had built a cage in their garage...obviously is for their dogs (they also have a beagle)...hopefully they plan on heating the garage with the house heat (the garage is attached to the house)....
I still feel bad for him tho because I'm sure he gets no socialization or even exercise...we have a big fenced in yard so we plan on asking the people if they can bring thier boxer over to play with our boxer sometime...hopefully they won't have an attitude with us because we stuck our noses in where they prob feel like it didn't belong... :o
