Boxer being left out in the cold...

About a block away from our home we noticed a brindle male boxer who is chained up out back of these peoples home. He has a dog house and what looks to be a water bowl, but with it being so cold here now I am feeling so bad for this boxer. It's been in the 20's and 30's here for the last few days and it's only going to get colder from here on out. My husband went down there today to talk to the people and explain to them how boxers are not good outside dogs and see if he could convince them to keep him inside, but they weren't home. He wanted to check to make sure this boxer had water, but he wasn't able to get close enough to him to see (he was barking and growling like crazy)...he does look to be a little on the thin side (even for a boxer's thin build) especially for a male and they have this big chain type collar on him with a very large chain hooked to it...
Anyway, the people who live there are spanish speaking so there might be a language barrier between us and them..but we'd like to atleast leave some type of letter on their door explaining our concerns and also explaining why boxers are not meant to be left outside in this weather...
Would this be out of line since he does have a dog house for shelter ?
I just hate to see him out there like that---it's so heartbreaking :(

I see no problem with trying to educate them. The worse thing that could happen is they ignore you. You might get lucky, and they'll take him in. Either way you'll know atleast you tried.

It's so sad that people have no sympathy sometimes :( I wish everyone treated their pets as part of the family and not just some animal.
Maybe you can print some information out for them in spanish and put it in their mailbox..?

Poor boxer. Please try again soon to try and talk to them. The note is a good idea. I can write in Spanish so if you like I can PM you a note explaining how boxers dont do well in the cold. I dont think it would be out of line at all as long as it is a friendly note.

I actually was able to find a site online that translated english to spanish so I typed something up to put on their door...but they were home so my husband was able to actually talk to the owner of the boxer...he said that normally (and I quote) "they keep the boxer in the big house next to their house"...my husband was puzzled by this since there was only one house on this property but he soon realized that the "big house" the guy was referring to was actually their shed(and the "little house" was the dog house) ! I guess they aren't allowed to have inside animals so they keep him in the shed at night and around back at the dog house during the day. :mad: Oh and I guess they just got this dog not long ago from a shelter !
I'm sure if we were to call our local animal control that they would probably think that this arrangement is fine since he has shelter. I don't know what else to do. :(

The poor boy:( I know he's got to be freezing...heck, Sam gets cold just thinking about going outside I just don't understand why these people even got a dog, what's the point of having an animal that you never see??

It has been way to cold here to leave your babies outside. I have adopted both my boys from shelters in Indiana, We would not even think of leaving our guys outside, but we were told stipulations to adopt our boys were they must be inside. I would call the shelter and just give them a heads up anyway. Does the "big house" have heat?

No the "big house" doesn't have heat, but he did say that they insulated it...not sure that's going to make much difference for a dog with only one coat, tho :(
I know what you mean, we would never leave either of our dogs outside like that...and our jack russell has 5x's the amount of fur that Keno has but we would still never leave her outside in this weather....heck, now that it's gotten this cold Keno doesn't even want to go outside--he'd rather stay snuggled up on his bed!
I know that boxer has to be very cold and now that I know he's only kept in the shed at night I feel even worse for him...I mean, I know this could be worse and he could be outside with no shelter at all , but this still seems too harsh for any short haired breed, let alone a precious boxer :(
We're going to atleast call animal control and inform them of this, especially since we now know that he came from a shelter not long ago and I'm sure the people had to agree to keep him inside....hopefully we can get somewhere doing that....
