zzzina I completely understand everything you are saying and I find myself feeling the exact same way. I wonder what is the difference between rescuing a dog or puppy from rescues then rescuing them from the pet stores. I know the answer to this question but isn't it rescuing no matter where the dog is? I know that buying (rescuing) the puppy will increase BYBs and puppymill profits but I would imagine that alot of the boxers in rescue probably come from petstores in the first place, so do we rescue them as babies or wait until they are a year or two and rescue them then when maybe they have already been abused. I really do understand what everyone here is saying about the puppymills and BYBs and I despise them as much as the next person.

Well said ! This is exactly how I feel too...while I do understand how bad puppy mills are I still believe that ALL puppies deserve a good home regardless of where they came from...and I have to really agree with you about the "rescuing" idea..whether it be when they are puppies at a pet store or when they are adults at a rescue..they still all need rescuing ! Plz don't anyone think that I condone puppy mills or even BYB's for that matter, because I absolutely do not...but I also cannot and will not condemn anyone who has "rescued" a puppy from either place either ! :)

HUHH???? Let's re-read what was just written here...if you know that a lot of boxers in rescue have probably started out in pet stores(and I agree with you whole-heartedly on that one), then why would you want to support the process that over-populates our rescues in the first place????

Yes, a lot of those boxers in rescues were probably "throw-aways" that started out as puppymill or BYB boxers and whose owners did not want to deal with the health problems that could affect boxers when not responsibly bred. Many other boxers may have never even made it to rescue, but instead, are living their lives mis-treated or neglected.

Please, everyone take a moment and think of that the next time a pup in a petstore tugs at your heartstrings...you'll just be opening up a spot in the cage for the next one.

This is such an emotionally charged issue that sometimes it's hard to look beyond the sad little eyes in the window. But those of us who seem to be preaching about what amounts to some of you as abandoning these babies are thinking about the ones who will fill their places tomorrow and next week and next year. The babies you have gotten from the pet stores and BYB's ARE the lucky ones. And I know it tears at your hearts to think NOW what your lives would be like had you NOT taken that baby home. What I and the others are asking is that you each stop and think about what it is you're support before you do it again. I know this example is a stretch and very simplistic but it does serve to prove the point. If the Ford dealership where you live, starting tomorrow, did not sell another car, NOT ONE, he would soon be out of business. And to expand on that, if the FORD corporation as a whole DID NOT sell another car anywhere in the world ever again they soon would stop making cars. The point is, stop the demand and the supply stops. It sounds cruel but the truth of the matter is as far as most of those people are concerned the puppies in that pet store are stock.

Sorry, Shakira's Mom, but that argument makes no sense at all.

Buying a puppy from a pet store is not "rescuing". They are two very different things. Buying from a pet store, or a BYB creates a market for that good. If I made 100 cards and sold them all for a nice profit, you can gurantee that I will make 100 more, and 100 more, so on. That is exactly what this BYB (and pet store) is doing. Whose going to "rescue" the next 100 pups? Are you advocating that everyone should go buy from pet stores, from here on out?

I for one, have rescued both my dogs (through an actual rescue). Both had a $250 adoption fee. I have no problem paying that, as the money goes directly to the Boxer Rescue organization and helps them further their cause and treat these poor Boxers.

Aside from that, I would be curious as to why the original poster was rejected by her local Boxer rescue group, as their is usually a pretty good reason.

I agree !!

I am coming from experience when I say this... I completely agree with the people that say " JUST DON"T DO IT" granted... All Boxers are awesome. However, I was COMPLETELY taken over by a BYB and I am here to say that I was the MOST IGNORANT person in the world. I got my Mattie from a shithole and didn't even see her parents. I was new to the doggie world... and boxerworld for that matter. I didn't do any research ( I am young and stupid, I admit) and now... I have a DOG, God only knows what she REALLY is. I look at her everyday like "wonder if she has pit in her, maybe beagle???" Fair enough, I love my dog more than ANYTHING in this world, and that is the truth. I would go to war for my baby. BUT at the same time... I wanted a boxer... I wanted a full-bread dog, I wanted someone to be like " what a beautiful boxer" not "she is mixed with something !!" I was FOOOLED PEOPLE I TELL YOU !!!!!! Mattie has a great great home... and she is loved wholeheartidly. However, I will never EVER EVER buy from a BYB or PUPPYMILL. Just think.... for the $850 that you spend on that poor puppy... you could have gotten a great boxer from a GREAT breeder.... and then donated the other $400 to your boxer rescue,............... OR rescued 2 boxers for that matter.
I know I made the biggest mistake. And my next dog will come STRAIGHT out of the rescue......

No I am not advocating this and I have never, ever purchased a puppy from a pet store. I was just saying that most people think that when they buy a puppy from the petstore that they are rescuing it from a terrible life there, my theory was rescue is rescue, the puppy is already born, are we to let them die????? I hate puppymills and BYBs and I stated that, I just think that everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone's opinions should be respected, if someone buys a puppy from the pet store or BYB then they shouldn't be chastised for that, I purchased my boxer from a BYB but I was not knowledgeable about such things at the time, since BW I know that you should buy from a reputable breeder. I just think that sometimes people think it should be their way or the highway and I think that everyone's opinions should be respected. Like zzzina she is trying to defend her puppy purchase and I don't think that she should have to feel that her pup is not as deserving as one from a reputable breeder. I know that this topic is emotional and when it comes to animals not being treated right I am the first one there to defend them and try to get them in a better situation. It is that it just breaks your heart to think that puppies are being born to die because someone doesn't think you should buy them. As far as the comment about the Ford cars not being sold and having to go out of business, that is a little different they are inanimate objects and have no life, life is precious and should be preserved.

I agree from all ends here; I have no one stance on this subject. Why? Because I can completely understand how it is hard to walk out of a pet store knowing that you are leaving behind a sweet little puppy who could be brought into a horrible situation. Before I found this website, I actually went into a place (that I probably can't mention, but a pet store) almost every week and played with a bunch of puppies there. I wanted so bad to take half of them home and to this day, I pray that each and every dog will have a happy home; thank God I didn't have the money for half of the dogs in there or Mark and I would probably be really poor! So, if you buy a puppy from a pet store I can understand why you did so.

Then on the other end of the fence, I can see why you wouldn't. I don't want to support BYB's and puppy mills but again, sometimes you see that one puppy that you just connect with and cannot leave behind, no matter the circumstances the poor thing comes from. The way I see it is the puppy is either going to die from a horrible disease acquired in the pet store or from its parents, or its going to go to a home - good or bad, or it's going to go to a shelter. As for both of those last two, in most situations, the puppy is going to end up having some kind of home, I'd rather know it was a good home than a bad home. And in both cases, the BYB usually ends up winning.

It's almost a lose-lose situation now that I really think about it. There will most likely always be puppy mills and BYB's because there is always going to be a person that is going to give into those sad eyes looking through the glass at you, silently begging you for a good, warm home. Personally, I won't ever step foot in a pet store again that sells dogs and cats (besides Petsmart, because Asia really doesn't give me a choice there) because I don't have the power or the heart to turn around and walk away from a sad faced puppy. But, I do not in any way think bad of anyone for purchasing their pup at a pet store; it actually makes me happy to know that they got a good home with a loving family!

I know this is an extremely touchy subject here on BW and I totally understand why, I'm just saying that I can see it from both ways... ;)

I was the original OP and I was never rejected by any boxer rescue...We have a 5 mos old boxer, but he was not a rescue....you must be talking about
zzzina (I believe she's the one who said she was never called by the rescue)... :)
