Boxer at mall pet store...

Earlier tonight we had to make a stop at the pet store in the mall so my son could get a pinky for his corn snake...I hate buying anything from this store because they also sale puppies and I hate the thought of giving them a penny of our money...unfortunatly no one in town had pinkies so we had no choice....anyway, while we were there we noticed the cutest little boxer puppy(around 10 wks old) that a young couple had out of it's cage...I walked over to see it (ofcourse) and told them that we have a 5 mos old at home...I told them that we bought ours from a local breeder tho...dh noticed right away that you could see this puppies neck/back bone and all of it's ribs..we told them that she was underweight...I asked how much the petstore was wanting for her and they said $900 !!!!!!!!! I wasn't too surprised tho...the guy asked us for our breeders info (which I just happened to have in my purse!) and I gladly wrote it down for him....I really wanted to tell them NOT to buy that puppy but my heart just wouldn't let me..it was a sickening feeling...I did tell them that they should go home and look up "puppymills" on the internet to see where these little puppies come from that are at the pet stores...and they obviously had never even heard of the phrase puppymill before because they asked me twice what it was called! That sweet puppy looked so sad...I could see it in her eyes that she didn't feel good at all...and when the girl was holding her against her chest the puppy just layed her head right up against her...you know, in a way I hope they ended up buying her just so she could get out of that place and get the love & care that she so deserves...it's just a very sad situation...I know you should never buy from a petstore, but then when you see those sweet innocent puppies you can't help but feel like they deserve to go to a good home...you know?
I'm sorry if I'm rambling...I'm sure I won't sleep good tonight at all because I'm going to be thinking of that sweet boxer all night... :(

Oh I forgot to also mention that they were selling "Pugles" there too !!! (half pug & beagle)...they cost $1000 !!!!!! Can you believe that???!!!!! :rolleyes:

I feel exactly the same!!! I went to a local pet store when I first was deciding which breed I was going to get... I had no intention on purchasing a dog from a pet store.. BUT when I saw Bailey in a cage with TWO Neo-Mastiffs I counld't leave him there. He is the best dog and thankfully has no health issues so far. He just turned 9 months and is healthy as a horse! Those places make me so mad!! The one pet store in our local mall has teenagers running it!! They have no idea about breeds or care for the pups, its just a job to them! The last time I went to the mall I went in ( I don't know why b/c it breaks my heart) there were ROACHES crawling around in the cages!! I called EVERYONE!! The Health Dept., Mall MAnagement and the local ASPCA. It was so disgusting.. I wanted to cause a distraction and let them all go!!!

OMG! roaches?!!! That is so awful...I'm glad you called the ASPCA and management...I know what you mean about teenagers running the pet store at your local mall --that's exactly who is running our mall pet store too...it's ridiculous !
I thought all night about that little boxer and I wish now I would have said something to them about her being so thin & even looking sick...I'm thinking about calling out there today to see if they still have her (the young couple were still looking at her when we left--and by the way the way the girl was looking I think they might have bought her)...but anyway, if she's still there then I'm going to get to the bottom of why she's so thin (I'm sure she's most likely infested with worms)....I guess they've had her for atleast a month because the people who were looking at her said that they had been there a month ago and she was there...
I guess it's best not to even go into those types of pet places because it's just so hard to turn around and leave those puppies there like that; especially when they have a precious boxer who looks both sick and sad
It weighs heavy on my heart now... :(
BTW, I'm so glad that Bailey is a happy healthy puppy !

Thankfully none of the pet stores here sell puppies or kittens...I don't think I could handle seeing it, especially if they had a precious baby boxer. I do have a pet store horror story though. When I was 6 my mother took me to the pet store and told me I could pick any puppy to take home. I saw this little white puppy and asked to see it. ( A bichon frise) I fell in love with the little thing. We took him home and a week later I went down to his crate to let him outside and he had died during the night. My mom called the pet store and told them what had happened and the guy said that she would have to bring the dog in as proof that it had died. Can you imagine??? We had to carry that poor little puppy back to the pet store so that the manager could tell that it was really dead. My mom said that she wanted her money back and the manager of the store said that we could only have another dog. We went to the back of the store where the puppies and kittens were kept and I took one of the first puppy's littermates. Luckily for both the puppy and me he lived a very long happy life.
I wish there was a law against BYB and puppymills. Those poor little things. No living thing deserves to be treated the way those animals in the puppymills are treated.

Made the mistake....

Of going to the pet store...of course there was a 9 week old boxer pup there, AND of course, after seeing the poor little things eyes, we now have a 13 week old Cashew, I just couldn't bear looking at that little face, and then walking away....Sometimes we just have to do what's right. I'd like to think we did. She is the greatest puppy, so far the vet says she is perfectly healthy.......of course if she continues to run head first into the coffee table, there may be some issues..... Just had to add my pet store story!

Well dh called the pet store today and they said that they sold the boxer last night...so I'm sure those people must have bought her...I feel better now that I know she's not there anymore...And I told dh that if our son ever needs to go there to get his snake a pinky that I am NOT going with them & if they see a boxer there I don't want to know about it!!

(I accidentally added this to my other post about our dogs playing rough...I must have had a brain fart.. :rolleyes: )

Unfortunately by buying the puppy, you have created a market. Your puppy will just be replace by another puppy. The only way we can stop puppy mills to to refuse to buy from them. I know it's really tuff, but you just have to walk away.

we have a little pet shop here in mcminnville and my husband and i walked in there the other day b/c it is next to the resturaunt we we eating out and we need to waste some time - well they had to boxer pups in their both for $200. they were a boy and a girl both flashy fawns w/ great markings about 8 weeks old. we got them both out and played with them for about 30 mins getting lots of boxer kisses - i just hate not knowing anything about them dealing with their health and temperment, although they seemed perfect! i just hope that whoever gets them treats them well b/c $200 is not a whole lot of money for a dog, i mean i have seen rescue organizations who ask that much and it just really worries me that someone is going to pick them up and not take care of them.

I'd have to agree with you zzzina...while I don't think buying from a petstore is the way to go, I can't help but feel like every precious boxer at every petstore needs to be rescued from those places....and that's exactly what you did, so I commend you!! Me being the boxer lover that I am, I think all boxers deserve a good home no matter where they came from
