Boston Terriers????

I have a female boston named Mia who is my darling. She totally has little man syndrome, but I love her still! Energy to boot and playfulness that matches our Rocky! Check out my gallery her photo is in there.

I had a boston terrier named Kermit before I got Harley. He was a great little dog. Everyone always said he was like a person in a little dog suit. He worked with me everyday at the horse farm I managed and ran around on 15 acres with all the other animals. My ex boyfriend found him while he was hiking on a mountain in vermont. He couldn't find his owner so he took him with him. He wanted to keep him, but I talked him into giving him to me. The first day I let him loose on the farm and he came back every 20 minutes to check on me (Harley would have been long gone!). He's probably the best dog I've ever had. He was my little shadow and even waited for me to come home the day he died. I got Harley at the pound 2 weeks after Kermit died, my mom wanted to buy me another boston terrier, but I figured that it wouldn't be the same and I would be disappointed in it.

I know what you mean. Bluto was my first boston terrier, he was an anniversary present from my then future husband. He was the runt of the litter and we picked him out because all the others were juping around and little Blu was sitting in the food dish looking so pathetic. I loved him with his one black eye patch and the way he would turn cartwheels in excitement! When Rocky II was put to sleep Bluto was very depressed and so was I. We decided to go to the Humane Society to look for another dog and found Max. Max was a dalmation mix of some kind and he was a riot. We only had him for 4 months when he was hit by a car. During a block party in my parents neighborhood he got out of the fence and a kid who always used to speed around the corner hit him. All neighbors really laid into this kid hard, there were lots of children out playing and it could have easily been one of them. I took Max to the ER vet and he was not in pain, but the vet confirmed his spine had been broken in several places and recovery was not looking good. Max kissed me but all he could move was his face. We put him down that day. Losing another dog so soon was devastating. About 1 1/2 weeks later the kid & his mom showed up at my house with a gift, Mia the boston. She was flea ridden and of poor quality but looked at me with eyes that begged for a chance. They had purchased her from a "breeder's" ad in the paper. I spent a good amount of money on her as she showed signs of anemia and had some sort of parasite that for a couple of days had me scared I was going to lose her as well. That was three years ago. Bluto went to the bridge last year and Mia can never replace him, but she carved her own little niche in my heart.

We have a Boston named Simon, we got him when Hugo was 9 mths old. My hubby wanted a smaller dog, and we found a good breeder for Bostons. Just like any breed, the temperament really depends on the individual puppy. Mine is the poster child for "little man" syndrome. He marks when we walk, and he will try to pick fights and bully other dogs. We tried to foster a Boxer and it was 48 hrs of our Boston picking fights with the other dog. We had him neutered early when we noticed his dominance issues, but after talking with other BT owners, some of them just tend to have those 'terrier' tendencies. It's not really 'aggression', they are just, on average, a highly dominant breed. On the upside, if we ever had a break-in, they would have a little black and white dog attached to their ankle. Simon has also dug several attempted tunnels to China in our backyard. (another terrier tendency)

Boston are also (typically) harder to housetrain than other breeds, but from what I hear that can be true of a lot of the smaller dogs. Our Boston, Simon, still will try to poo in our family room if we forget to put up the doggie gate. But then again, it took us 5 months to train our Boxer. (they just don't like to go outside when it's cold out)

On the upside, they are incredibly sweet and sensitive. They are absolutely hillarious to watch, our Boston has about 12 tennis balls hidden under the sofa! They don't have the 'doggie' smell, don't really shed, and are relatively healthy and long lived. Simon is starting to get the one health issue for Bostons: patella subluxation. He was racing down the hardwood stairs and slipped.

If you want the small breed most like a Boxer, I don't think you'll get any closer than a Boston Terrier. They are little sweeties and will crack you up on a regular basis with their little attitudes! I'd make sure you find a good breeder and they can match you with the best puppy. Good Luck!!

another question i had was about their ears. do the have to be cropped to stand up or are they naturally that way?? Like I said I just started to look at this breed and i what to be sure of what i would be getting myself into. thankx again

Boston Terrier ears stand up naturally. (although some show dogs will have their ears cropped also) They are born flat and start to stand up around 2-4 mths old, depending on the dog. Our Simon is a moose at 26 lbs. and his were flying high by 8 weeks old.
