My BF thinks I am ruining my 6 month (1/8/2005)boxer. He gave him to me as a gift. Now I do work with Oscar on a regular basis on obedience, but probably not as much as I should. He knows sit, come, lay down, leave it and off. He is pretty well behaved but when someone new ,furry or not comes along all the training goes out the window. We took him on a off leash walk in a field and there was some dogs that were tied up in someones back yard and Oscar went running up there, completely neglecting our cries for him to come back. Now he goes to the dog park regularly and this has never happened before. Now my BF has got a special leash and all the tools to "Get Seroius About Training." He says it is all my fault because I baby him to much, and that I caused him to have seperation anxiety, whine all the time, pout and and some of his other unruly antics. Now I do baby him but I think some of his bad behavoir is due to being a puppy, and of what I read here some of it may be typical of boxer behavior, specially until they grow up. He made me feel like a bad mom. I certainly want a well behaved dog, but I make allowances due to he is still just a puppy. He's chewing so hide the shoes, give him toys. Jumping don't give him attention until he calms down. Scratching the door, wait until he chooses a more civilized way to let me know he wants inside. Although I am grateful that my BF is going to help with the training, he has a soft heart for animals and I know he won't be cruel or yell during training. But I am so insulted, I don't know if I am just overreacting or I am justified in being angry. From the start he dropped of Oscar "Here's a baby" and has nothing to do in the care of him since. He is just the guy that Oscar gets to play rough with a couple times a week. During housetraining if Oscar peed on the floor, it was like" Cara, Oscar peed on the floor over there you better clean it up." " Oscars water dish is empty maybe you should fill his bowl" and " You spent how much at the vets office, wow that's crazy". He hasn't helped any when it comes to Oscars upbringing, so i am really steamed that he feels that he can even have an opinion on how Oscars being trained. Ok I am done vented, thanks for listening.

Dillon listens when it's convenient

It's all just being a puppy. Dillon is 14 months old and he is a VERY good dog and listens and does all his commands, but get him where there is another dog involved and suddenly you would think he was deaf. We have to really yell and get that mad deep voice before he knows we really mean business and then he sticks what he has left of a tail between his legs and pouts. Boxers are very sensitive dogs, so don't be too harsh with the training, but yes they do need to listen.

We took Dillon to obedience school right at 6 months and it did wonders. Try to do something that you and your BF can do together. The trainer told us that she was not there to train our dogs but to train us to be good dog owners and that's totally true.

Good luck! You're a great mom and care a lot about your baby from what I've read in your posts.

you sound like you have everything under control you tell that BF of yours if he wants to give his opinion on oscar and tell you what to do and not to do tell him he can help pay vet bills food etc. your his mommy that takes care of him. dont feel like a bad mommy. and the running off thing and ignoring the commands is normal. can youtake him to different environments to do his training so he wont just do the commands in your home?

Perhaps you can make training something you BOTH can do with your puppy. Something fun!
If not, when the BF starts with his mouth, show him the door.

(I tell my husband, "Don't make me choose......") ;)

sounds like you are doing great with oscar bf however needs more training lol. just keep doing what you are doing dont confuse oscar he is a baby after all and is used to mommy training him. if your bf cant clean puppy pee or fill a water dish then he certainly cant take the time to train a puppy. as for serious training take the leash and collar and tell him you are going to use them on him. lol.

Just let your boyfriend know that it sounds like Oscar's behavior is normal. Think about it this way, he's 6 months old, that's about the same as having a 2 -3 year old kid. And you have the same problems, they are still learning and testing their boundaries, they know a little bit, but are stubborn when it comes to listening, and most of all, are very easily distracted. The most important thing you can do for a pup is just what you're doing - give them lots of love!!

You know what?? My mother tells me the same thing. She used to tell me that Boo was crazy and had no manners--guess what?? Boo is now 3 and she is the "good dog". Now I get harassed because I don't teach Skye any manners. Well, I feel that to a certain extent, they are puppies and you have to allow them to be puppies. I get after them if they are doing something dangerous to themselves or others--but I don't nag or yell at them. With quiet consistancy, they'll grow out of the puppy behavior and grow up to be happy, well trained and confident big dogs.

I wouldn't listen to your BF. My DH is the same way. He thinks the way I train, the way I think dogs think, etc. isn't right. He has made me feel like I don't know what I'm talking about on numerous occassions. So I asked him, "I've read several training books, what about you?" We've just enrolled our 2 in basic obedience. The first class was basically getting to know everyone's problems and the trainer went over his method of training. Surprise, surprise he talked about the things that I currently do and now all of a sudden DH believes that I know what I'm talking about.
Stick with it. It sounds like you are doing the right things. :)
