TheBoxerCrew...I LOVE your sign!

I may have to replace the one we have with that one! We have a regular sign with a boxer siloutte on it. I strongly believe in having my sign up to keep people from opening my gate. Sad as it is I don't worry about my pups biting as much as I do about losing one if it wandered out of our yard. An exterminator left our gate open right after we moved in our new home and Rocky was standing in the front yard woo-wooing at the neighbors. They came over and let me know he was loose, I was so mad with the guy who left the gate open! Also we had a kid about a year ago go into our yard after his soft ball, Rocky cornered him and he was scared. I think if people know their is a dog in the yard they are less likely to open the gate!

My sign on my gates says "My dogs belong in my yard - do YOU?"

That's great! Local pet stores don't seem to have much of a selection of clever dog signs and no one has listed any websites where they've bought their clever signs, if bought online. Where do people get some of these clever signs?

Posting a beware of dog sign is in no way indicating a vicous dog on the premisis it is forewarning people that there is a dog on the premisis so if they were tresspassing for example and your dog bit them you can't be held responsible because it was clearly posted. We have several signs on the back of our fence since we live behind a school and some kids like to try to cut through the yards but heaven forbid if tyson was to knock one of them down just saying hello their parents could sue if it was not posted as long as it is your safe. Thats how it goes in New Hampshire at least I would think it would be the same almost everywhere. Anyone know where to get a funny sign it would look much better on the front gate than a regular one.

It must depend what the laws are in each state. I can tell you that in No. VA they don't protect you to any extent if someone was to trespass and get bitten. Neither does a swim at your own risk sign, if you had one posted on your pool in your yard and a kid jumped over your fence and into your pool, the sign doesn't do much to protect you. It might give YOU peace of mind, but that's about it. Don't get me wrong, I DO have a beware of dog sign and in no way do I believe that it shows that I know my dogs are viscious (which they are not), but they do get EXTREMELY excited and like to jump, therefore people should be aware that they are there.

I had mine made by a local guy who does a lot of woodworking. It is his retirement hobby, and he laughed when I told him what I wanted, and one for both my front AND back gates. His wife told me that he was up all night that night working on them, chuckling the whole time - he told his wife he could only imagine what would go through someone's mind when they saw the sign and then were greeted by dogs who probably would NOT want them there.

Sounds like your guy would make a mint if he started making and selling the signs online. Maybe he could give you a cut of the profits

I have one in my window but it was put there as a joke when we just had Bailey cause he would bark like hell whenever anyone came. However, we decided to keep it up - my neighbour has a husky which is as gentle as a lamb but she has one too. My belief is if people are aware you have a dog and God forbid something should happen then there is less risk of being sued and of course it keeps those pesky salesmen away.

I should see if the guy would make more.....:)

BUT - back on topic..... I think the beware of dog sign thing is going to boil down to what your local/state laws are. I found these while researching. Granted "dog bite law" is what keeps coming up....but maybe it will shed some light.

I am going to talk with my local Animal Control people either today or tomorrow about this - since I have a nosy neighbor who knows my dogs aren't out 24/7. I have caught him 2x now in my yard late at night. Lillie doesn't like him.....not in the dark, not in the daylight.

Good links. So do you also need a "No Trespassing" sign put up for those people in states that have strict liability for dog bites? That would mean they're not lawfully on private property and you should be excluded from the strict liability, no? Probably would be good to talk to a lawyer since I see that Michigan is one of those states with strict liability for dog bites.

I am not sure what the legal requirements are, but I was told that if you own a dog and someone gets into you backyard/garden, and the dog bites them that they can have the dog put to sleep. So I have a sign on my back gate which say's Beware of the Dog Enter at you own Risk. And I have got to say I don't get any unauthorized visitors. Hope this is of help.
