I have gone with the Beware of Dog sign and a No Trespassing sign on my gate. But I too also have my gate locked so no one can enter. At my front door I have another Beware of Dog sign. I plan on getting a No Solicitor sign next. I'm hesitant to get a dog breed sign because I worry it might let the would be dog nappers know exactly where to find a certain breed they want. JMO

What's funny about the Beware of Dog signs and getting into trouble because people assume that you know your dog is mean. If you look up the word Beware it means
To be on guard against; be cautious of
v. intr.
To be cautious; exert caution

Which of course you should be cautious around all dogs and animals. :) Just a added point. Not trying to stir the pot. :)

I talked to my insurance agent regarding this and would suggest the same to anyone else. He said it could easily go either way, sign means dog may be vicious, no sign is letting people get injured without warning. In the end after talking round and round, we opted to put up a sign. I'm sure different communities have different laws. Talk to your insurance agent and ask if it would help relieve or add to your liability.

When we lived in NY, I had a large fenced-in yard. One day, a couple of religious solicitors opened the gate and walked right up to my side door! At the time, I had Sammi and my beloved Rottie, Max. Any number of things could have happened, although neither dog has (or had) a vicious bone in their body, Max could have knocked someone over and either of them could have gotten out of the yard (they were both inside with us). My first thought was to get a Beware Of Dog sign, but after speaking to a few people, we decided on a No Trespassing sign. It tells people to stay off your property without opening up the idea that you're harboring a vicious animal.

I agree that one should post a "Dogs on Premises" sign instead. I have heard that posting a Beware of Dog sign is bad, if your dog bites someone and you have a sign it shows that you know your dog to be a potential threat and a huge lawsuit.

I have a sign on my front door for the fire department the "Save our Pets" sign, although to be honest I don't think it would make a difference, when my house burned down after I repeatedly told the fire crew to get the dogs, they didn't, they ended up dying :(

I guess its there to make me feel better.

I have my own way of keeping solicitors away, any time they knock Sully and Tyson run up and jump up on the front door and usually scare them away (if I was the solicitor and loved boxers I would knock louder so I could meet them)

I was out driving the other day and saw a boxer girl playing with a dane and pulled over and asked the owner if I could meet his lovely pair, I showed him my pictures of Tyson and Sully and we exchanged stories.. you can always spot a boxer owner... crazy from 500 yards over them! I can spot a boxer from 1000 yards I swear! its too funny my boyfriend wonders how I do it!

I've read every post in this thread, and love ALL the signs you folks have, to announce the presence of your dogs.
My question is, where do you get these great signs??

Ive always been told that if you have a beware of dog sign, then your basically saying your dog is dangerous, so if it bites anyone, then its your fault

We just had an incident of a meter reader just opening the gate and walking right in, the reader has never ever done this before. Phoebe and George were out and had the man up against the fence until we came out. The meter reader was very shaken up, but said everything was his fault.

As a result of this I just made a sign, by wood burning a silhouette of a Boxer. I wrote on the sign: Boxers at Play- Honk Holler or yell-we'll be right out.

We have a chain link gate across our driveway becuase the driveway goes all the way to the back of the house and also another regular chain link gate on the other side of the house so it keeps Jake secure in the yard and we have signs that have a picture of a boxer and they say 'Beware of Boxer Dog'. We want everyone to know there is a dog in the yard for everyone's safety. I really don't believe Jake would hurt anyone, but I'm more afraid of him getting out and getting hit by a car. You can design your own signs at petsignsonline.com - that's where I purchased our signs.

I have a 'Beware of Dog' sign at my house. I know if Greta ever got a hold of someone she'd lick them to death. She doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. I live by myself in a 1 bedroom condo. My boyfriend visits a lot, but he has his own house about 15 miles away. Since I live by myself, I like having the 'Beware of Dog' sign. I would hope it would keep any potential intruders away. Not to mention the pesky solicitors!! :) It makes me feel safe. I do not worry about her getting out and/or hurting anyone. I have no reason to think she would do that.
