Benefits of AKC registration?

If I'm correct, the AKC keeps count of the # breeds registered also. The lab has been the most registered breed for quite some time. I don't quite know what the purpose is but to me it can show an increase in the # of BYB's of a certain breed or a sudden increase in popularity of a breed, like dalmations due to 101 Dalmations or chiuahua's (sp?) due to the Taco Bell commercials & Legally Blonde.
I did register Zoe & was recently wondering if there was a point to it since I have no plans to breed or show her. But to me it's the fact that she is registered is kind of a prestige thing, I guess Obviously I couldn't register Harley as he's white...

Since we're not planning on breeding or showing our little puglet, we've decided not to register.

I definitely appreciate all the opinions.

How is it not responsible to have documentation of your pure-bred dog?

When one has a pure-bred dog, as I know you clearly do, Managio, it is your responsibility to take as many steps as you can to help ensure the purity of the breed. Of course that does NOT mean breeding necessarily. But it is, in my opinion, what a responsible pure-bred dog owner has to do. If one did not want to go through such processes, then would not just a mutt do?

You mean like all of those "AKC Reg rare white boxers" with white sire or dam that I see in newspaper adverts constantly? Yeah - I see your point. They are a whole lot more responsible than someone who treats their dog well, but chooses not to register. :rolleyes:

I chose not to register Baxter, or any of my dogs for that matter, so I guess I'm an irresponsible owner too. Oh well.

I always thought BW meant responsible by health testing, breeding to improve the breed, proper training techniques, promoting good nutrition, spaying/neutering and not being an outside dog. No where does registering affect those things.

It is just a piece of paper from a registering body that does not even care about those things, as long as the bloodlines are pure. BW is about responsibility, not snobbery.

Now I did register Jedi but only because I thought it was cool.
So if you are not going to do shows or any events that require AKC paperwork, there is no need and in no way would it be irresponsible if you don't register.

Cubby brings up a very good question. What about all the BYBs or Whites that are registered? How does registering them make it any more responsible?

How does registering a dog that isn't going to be shown or bred preserve the purity of the breed?

Also, should all rescue dogs be ILP-ed in your opinion as well?

I could understand your point if you were making a statistical argument, but to use the argument of ensuring purity makes no sense to me. Can you please clarify?

And speaking of responsible pet owners - have you spayed Molly yet?
