Bell Training.. Why didnt I do it before?!

I have a strand of bells hanging on the back door knob. I got them when we had gone to a wedding and they were setting on the table for everyone.. for the dinner decoration.. I used a string hung the bells on it and that's it. Abigail will hit the bells with her nose to ring them and you know she wants out. She will ring them to just go out and play but that's fine.. its her way of telling us let me out of here... it took a few days to train her but no more accidents so it really works great.

I have to agree that bell training was THE best thing to do. Kirra was really good about going out, but she had no way to tell me aside from sit in front of the door patiently. It took her about 2 weeks and man alive...she got it. She is 18 weeks and since bell training she has had no accidents. She goes up to it and whacks it with her paw. I have to laugh cause when she really has to go she tends to whack the bells twice - I guess that's her way of saying NOW!! 
LOL I'm working on my 7 1/2 year old minpin and he just has no desire to do it but then he has been speaking for that long. Kirra will hit the bells for him when I ignore his barking...and who says dogs aren't smart?

I have a large christmas bell that I actually attached to a banana holder. LOL It is the perfect height for Joey to hit with his paw, it keeps him from scratching the door frame and it swings freely so no knocking the paint off of the door either.

Hi all... One more testament for bell training!
I read about it here on Boxerworld months before we got our boxer baby, and I have to admit I was a little skeptical. I've owned other types of dogs in the past, and they've always made some kind of noise when they had to go out. When we brought Lucy home and she was starting to understand that potty was an outside thing, I was surprised to see that she just sat at the back door. If she whined at all, it was softly -- and with her lips closed -- which was impossible to hear across the house. I hung a couple of Christmas bells on the back door with a "what-the-heck-it-can't-hurt" attitude, and used her paw to jingle them every time we went outside. She was hitting the bells herself in no time -- she's now just shy of 12 weeks old and we haven't had an accident in the house in over two weeks. These kids are so smart!!!
It's definitely an inexpensive and easy thing to try, and it just might save you mega-bucks on carpet cleaning and mop water.
