While camping this past weekend our boxer Shillaleigh (5 months old) was stung by a bee. A few minutes later (about 15) the sting area swelled and she broke out in hives all over! I had just researched what to take camping in the Boxer World Forum before we left but I knew that the Benedryl was not going to do it. My husband rushed her to the local emergency vet and they gave her shots including Benedryl, a steroid, and epinephrine along with a prescription for Benedryl. She was also running a high temperature (104.7). When we returned home I called our own vet to see if I could get a prescription for an epipen in the unfortunate event that this would happen again. The vet's response was to first have Shillaleigh take allergy tests to find our what type of "bee" she was allergic to and then follow that up with serum shots to build her immunity to the sting (both very costly). My question is: Should I give Shillaleigh shots of the serum to build her immunity over a long period of time or should I find a vet who will prescribe an epipen I can carry everywhere along with some Benedryl? Help please.

Get an opinion from another Vet. before going through all the testing. I'm glad your baby is doing fine now.

I'm glad your baby is okay. I would also get a second opinion.

We had a similar incident last year when Louie was stung by a bee. Within 15 minutes he had hives all over his body and his face swelled up so bad that his eyes were swelled shut. We rushed him to the vet and he also got similar medication that you mentioned. The vet also gave us Predisone just in case it happens again and he suggested that we always have benedryll.
Well last week we went to the cottage and again Louie was stung by 2 bees and he didn't have an allergic reaction this time.

Found vet to prescribe the epipen

We will be going to a different vet on Friday to get a prescription for an epipen (just in case). Has anyone ever tried the allergy injections to build immunity to the allergen or desensitize the dog to the allergen? If so, does it work and how long did it take?

Hi I dont know if this is useful but Dakoda went through bee stings around that age and our vet said she had to be at least 12 months before they could do proper allegy tests as it may have just been a 'puppy thing' . She was also getting hives when there were no bees around
We did have a prescription of tablets on hand for the mean time and we did have to use them a few times but her second summer, coincentally was just after her 1st bday and what do u know - NO stings.( touch wood for this summer!!!!)
They never mentioned being able to build up her immune system rather that she may become immune to the drugs if she used them too much.

I dont know if thats at all helpful but a second opinion wont hurt.

I was always under the impression that if the first reaction was a "bad" one they would only get worse over time.

We had to rush Jersy to the vet a few months back for a steroid shot also as the benedryl did not cut it.... vet gave us some steroid pills also to use...He got stug again a few days ago so we gave him 1/4 steroid pill and a benedryl as recommended and within 30 min his face was back to normal....

We have a little bee sting kit for him now lol

hair loss

We just noticed today that Shillaleigh has a few patches of skin on the back of her neck where she has lost her hair. Could her bee sting two weeks ago have effected her immune system and cause demodex mange or something like this? She has always had a great coat and eats Chicken Soup. The only change has been the bee sting and shots she received after including epinephrine, steroid, and benedryl. Why is her hair falling out?

Chancey had a severe allergic reaction about 3 weeks ago too. Her coat has also thinned quite a bit in patches. I'm waiting to see if it starts coming back on its own since there are no other symptoms.
