I was thinking of going to the beach for the day (DE State Seashore allows dogs) Can anyone offer advice for me? I'm going to be sure to bring plenty of water as well as towels. Are they okay to be in the sun a long time if they have water to cool off in? SHould I bring a beach umbrella so they have shade? Any other advice?

An umbrella for shade would be a good idea. Bring sunscreen also for you and the dog. They can get sunburned as well, so make sure they are covered too. Enjoy!!

We live at the beach and spend a lot of time there with Dolly. I think the other posts have covered the basics; water, shade, sunscreen. Also, don't forget to take some fun beach type toys and treats to make it even more enjoyable for your babies. You should take towels but dont think that there is any way you'll get out of there with anything clean. You, the dogs, the car...it will all be coverred with sand at the end of the day...but your dogs will have a great time and an even better nights sleep when you get home. Have fun!!!

OH and make sure to have a leash that you dont care if it gets dirty. Our Dasia is a swimmer and when we took her to Cannon Beach in Oregon we had to leave a leash on her so that we could grab her quickly, she likes to swim and swim. So once she hits the ocean she would literally try to swim away!! She is crazy! So we have to leave a leash loose on her so that we can grab her when she goes too far! :)

Good luck and have tons of fun!!!!!!

We always take a long leash also, here you can take dogs to several areas but they are supposed to be on leash (of course there's always some that arent). This way we can have control over Roscoe if necessary but he can run around and check everything out also.
Have fun!!

The above posts have really covered it. Take a leash that you don't mind sand getting in the clasp and making it very hard to use in the future!

Even if I take off the leash and don't need to use it, somehow they always get sand in the clasp. What Letti said is true - there is sand EVERYWHERE.

I am always the dirtiest dog owner on the beach because my dogs play with me and are so clingy!
Towels, towels, towels, water, water, and sunscreen.

:p
Have a great time. My furkids love it!

I take a 10-foot tie out with me that Xena is always on as a courtesy to other people on the beach. Some people are afraid of dogs, or uncomfortable with having their kids near strange dogs so I keep Xena leashed at all times around people :)
