Baxter's body was laid to rest April 9, 2005 at 11:25 a.m. At that time, Baxter's spirit began a new journey. His journey home.

Tuesday I called and made Baxter's final appointment. It was the most difficult phone call I ever had to make. But, we knew it was time. Baxter had fought long and hard and had finally endured enough. When I came home from work Tuesday night, Baxter did not get up to greet me nor did he wag his tail and it broke my heart. I laid with Baxter that night telling him of all the great friends he would meet and what I thought the Bridge would be like. The next day, Baxter appeared to have more energy and was alert and lively again. We thought this occasion called for McDonald's cheeseburgers and he thoroughly enjoyed his! Thursday was his best day, it was almost as though he had never been sick. Baxter was doing so well, we talked about postponing the appointment and taking things day by day though deep down I was fearing that this was the "rise before the fall". Jason and I stayed home with Bax on Friday and were again pleased to find Baxter having a good day. Our groomer was out to the house on Friday (mobile pet salon) and Bax enjoyed a good bath. Friday night it was pizza for dinner, Bax loved it! Before going to bed Friday night, we noticed that Baxter was beginning to decline. I thought perhaps he had outdone himself and was extra tired from the past few days. However when we woke up Saturday, Baxter had hit rock bottom. He was not able to get around or even lift his head up. He barely ate his breakfast and I had to hold him up to go potty. When I let go of him, he fell over. There was no doubt in our minds that we had made the right decision. It was strange though how he could go from so good to so bad. It was as if there was a divine intervention. We got three really great days to share with him and remember and then he goes to a point of no return. I don't think our timing could have been anymore perfect. I had always hoped I would know, I had always hoped that Baxter wouldn't suffer. I believe we were blessed, very blessed. My sister, nieces and nephews came to say good-bye to Baxter. The entire time they spent petting and kissing him, he never really acknowledged them. Then it was time to leave, that was tough. We stopped at McDonald's on the way to the vets office. They weren't serving lunch yet so we got Mr. B a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit with a hashbrown. He ate every last bite of it! Mr. B also had a few Dove dark chocolates before he left us. Bax left us with a full tummy, that made me happy.

Baxter's passing was very peaceful. Bax was tired and ready to go, he stopped breathing when the anesthia was administered. After Baxter was gone, his nose began twitching. I wondered what he was smelling and it made me smile. I used to ask Jason how Bax would know who we were when he was able to see again, Jason would say that Bax would be able to smell us. We believe that nose twitching was him sniffing us out to make sure who he was seeing was really us! That thought warms my heart.

The past 11 months seem like a blur now. Baxter was a survivor, a true fighter. Who would have ever thought we would have made it this far from his initial diagnosis. We feel truely blessed. We were very lucky that we got to celebrate many special "last" moments with Baxter such as his last birthday party. We were fortunant to know that Baxter was terminally ill, it allowed us the opportunity to take hundreds of pictures and make priceless memories. We were able to spoil him rotten and leave no regrets.

I know that Baxter is now pain free, running like the wind. I am so very happy for him, I'm just sad for myself. Life just isn't the same without him. My life became being Baxter's caretaker, now it seems so empty. I miss everything about him. Yesterday there was more of a sense of relief. Relief that he was no longer suffering and that he was whole again. Today there is emptiness and sadness. Jason and I have gone through all of his pictures and spent hours retelling his stories. I love that we have so many memories and I know one day they will make us smile. Right now is tough though.

Mommy and Daddy love and miss you Mr. B! You will always be special to us. You hold a very big place in our hearts which keeps you with us always. We know that you are in a better place. We know you are happy and healthy again. Please know we will think of you everyday and smile. You touched many hearts and lives along your journey, you deserve the best that Heaven can offer you.

Aimee & Jason,
You guys have had such a rough time of it. I am grateful that in the end it was easy & peaceful. I never met Mr. B but feel as though I knew him from all the posts. God bless you for your selflessness. You guys could have taken in a young pup and saved yourselves the worry, financial costs, & aggravation of an older guy but you did not. Old & blind you guys opened your heart to this wonderful soul and showed him nothing but love and I know that there is a special place at the bridge for the two of you when you see Baxter again.

I smile just thinking of the reception Baxter recieved from all our boxer babies. Can you imagine a young Baxter & Goliath Knowles running amok, letting all the young pups up there know that they rule the roost! My Rocky I surely showed Mr. B where all the best running spots are. My boston Bluto did some of his special cartwheels I am sure!

My heart feels the loss of Baxter as well. Yesterday I kept looking at the clock wondering when it was going to happen. I cut flowers from my garden for my brother Steve this morning. When I went to his grave i talked to him like I always do and told him a wonderful old soul was in heaven and to please scratch him behind his ears. Steve was a boxer lover as well and I am sure he was there to say Hi to Mr. B.

Aimee, you & Jason are in my thoughts & prayers. If there is anyhting at all I can do for for you please let me know. How are Lexi & Dusty. I am sure they will feel Baxters loss as well. God Bless your family and be strong knowing that Baxter is free from all the limitation of his illness. He can run once more!

Godspeed Mr. Baxter angelicon

Aimee, as I write this, I am bawling. I know all too well how you feel. Your post made me think of my Sheba, she wasnt a boxer, she was a German Sheppard, my very first dog, my parents bought her as a puppy for me when i was about 3 months old. We grew up together, she was my best friend. One day when we were both twelve, i was petting her belly and I found a lump. We took her to the vet and I can remember hearing the doctor saying cancer, and I looked up at my Mom and saw the look in her eyes and I knew. That was enough for me, I ran out of the room and to our car and just curled up into a ball and started crying, I couldnt imagine my life without my best friend. We had the option of having surgery but there was a 50/50 chance that she would make it and we just couldnt put her through that, so the doctor told us to take her home and spend as much time as we could with her. 3 days later she was gone, we helped her to the bridge. I wasnt there physically but i was there in spirit. My sister bought me a locket and put a picture of me and Sheba in it and put it around Shebas neck. We bought her McDonalds too lol. The pain of losing them never leaves you, but in a ways I think thats a good thing because you will never forget them.
I felt so bad having to do that to Sheba, but in the end it was the best for her, her tumour burst while they were putting her to sleep. When I read your post, I looked at the picture I have of her and I that was taken the day before she left us. Its hanging on my wall. I started to bawl because I miss her so much even thought its been 7 years. But just knowing that shes in Heaven, watching me and being healthy and young again sort of makes it worth it. I still cry about her, and I dont think ill ever get over her, but she gave me 12 years, and I couldnt ask for anymore.

Godspeed Baxter angelicon watch out for Sheba up there, shes a little feisty

Aimee, your tribute to Baxter is beautiful. The tears are flowing as I write this. I think I speak for everyone here in saying that we all feel such a profound sense of loss.
I never had the priviledge of meeting Baxter, but I felt that I knew him as well as one of my own. What a superstar he was and how blessed he was to have a mom and dad that loves him so much. Thank you for sharing him with us.
I can just imagine the big smile on his face when he was able to see you and Jason for the first time!
We took flowers to the cemetary yesterday for my dh's mother,I took a beautiful red rose for Baxter and told her to look for a distinguished silver senior and give him a big hug and kiss from us.

I will light a candle for you Baxter

Aimee and Jason,
I am crying so hard that I can hardly type. Those three "good days," that your Baxter gave to you, reminded me so much of the "good day" my girl Magic gave to me.

A few days before she passed away I begged Magic, through my tears, to come back to me...to get well again. She surprised me the next morning as she was acting like her old self again. I thought my "will" and "my prayers" had worked! Much to my sorrow, she only gave me that one special day. It gave me so much hope that when she turned bad again, I was completely devastated. I did not think my heart could ever feel as much pain as when her illness took over her again. I knew, at that point, I was going to loose her forever.

Someone explained to me that the “one good day” was Magic's way of saying goodbye to me so that I would remember her for the way she was before she got sick. I'd also like to feel that it was Magic's way of saying..."remember how much I love you mom and always will." I'd like to think that Baxter gave you those special days before his passing...to show you how much he loved you and that he knew you loved him back. So that you could see him for what he use to be before he got so sick.

I try to stay out of the "Health" threads because I am still so raw from what Magic and I went through. However, I just recently read about Baxter and all that you did for him. I know how hard the both of you fought to win this battle and I am so very, very sorry things went the way they did. I wish so much it could have been different.

Goodbye, sweet Baxter, goodbye; Magic, please give Baxter lots and lots of your sweet boxer kisses.
