Bailey's leg re-broken!

I just recieved a phone call from a very distraught Jamie (pep0987), from Florida.
For a little review, Bailey was hit by a car in March. The leg had an awful time healing and really never did heal right. Bailey has not had full use of his leg and in fact has had a slight limp due to the break.

Jamie has been back in Indiana since last Tuesday picking up some of her belongings that were left behind in the move to Florida. On return to Florida and picking up Bailey Jamie noticed his leg was swollen. She took him to an emergency vet and was told the leg has re-broken. Apparently the leg had not healed even as well as they thought. The emergancy vet stated he could even have re-broken it simply from standing up! There seems to be alot of calcium deposits noted on the x-ray around the break.
Jamie and Joe were given 2 options... surgery...with no guarantee (sp) that the leg could be fixed,... or...amputation.
Bailey is under potenet pain killers right now and resting at home.
Jamie is devestated and feeling awful.

Jamie wanted me to post even though she has not been on the board for some time. She misses everyone and hopes you will send out prayers for Bailey.
Please send good and healing vibes for Bailey, and prayers and thoughts for Jamie and Joe.

Please let Jamie, Joe, and Bailey know they're all in my thoughts and prayers. I know they have a really tough decision to make. I really hope everything works out for them.

When my son broke his leg, surgery talk was to place pins in the leg at various positions. Is this the same with dogs? My son limped at first because he was frightened of the pain of putting presure on his healing leg. Could she get a second opinion? Thank you, I will say a novena for her baby.....

I also think a second opinion is a good idea. Even if you don't get a better answer at least you know that you were going to make the most informed decision.

I am sure they will do what is best for their baby and I pray for a quick recovery.

When Dempsey J. broke his leg, it did not heal properly either. The bones did not knit, so he "re-broke" it all the time. This isn't really the right thing to say in his case, because what happened was the bone never healed and the two pieces just kept slipping out of position. Our first vet advised time and rest. After four months of re-injury after re-injury, I went for a second opinion. I should have gone sooner. I too was told about the possibility that the leg would need to be amputated. I was devistated. The second vet referred us to an orthopaedic surgeon at the Michigan State University clinic, and he was very good about explaining our options. He recommended a surgical correction witha screw, but made no promises about whether it would help. He said the amputation would only be a good idea if there had been extensive calcification or joint damage, so he wouldn't do that. We went with the surgery, and I am happy to say that four months later Dempsey J. is exceeding all expectations. He is even able to run off-lead, which we never expected.

As something else to think about, since Dempsey J.'s break was in his carpal or "wrist" bone, the surgeon also said there was an option to fuse the whole joint and make it immobile. Then he wouldn't have been able to hurt it again. We did not do this because it was an invasive, extensive procedure and he thought it would be better to try the screw first. Perhaps this could be an option for little Bailey?

I agree with Nathan on the second opinion. It always puts your mind at ease that you made the right decision expecially with one this huge. Good luck and boxer slurps and wiggle from my gang. Hope Bailey gets to feeling better soon!:D

I'm sorry to hear that Bailey is hurt! I can't imagine what Jamie and Joe are going through! I will be sending prayers their way and Oliver and Lucy send hugs and kisses to Bailey!

I agree with everyone else, i would deifnitly get a second opinion, or see if she can get in to see a specialist. when subi was diagnosed with severe HD they didnt give me a lot of options, so after 2 vets i finally went to a specialist that said the same thing the 1st vet did but for some reason because they were a specialist, one of the best in MD, and explained things better it made me feel better,. and subi is doing AWESOME!!!

Just tell her to keep her chin up!!! it will all work out/
