Bad Reaction to neutering

At the request of everybody I spoke with about neutering Miles, I decided to have it done. After he got home he was fine the first day, then he started throwing up and crapping blood....and was very very lazy. We thought it was due to the meds he took for pain killers...but that wouldn't have caused throwing up and internal bleeding. Any response is appreciated. This can't be a normal reaction!! Thanks.

I would be calling your vet. An upset stomach the first day or so isn't unusual, but the blood is something I would be really concerned about.

Depends on the meds. The most common side effects of NSAIDs (Rimadyl/Carprofen, Deramaxx) are gastrointestinal - and most definitely include ulcers and internal bleeding. Some dogs also have bad reactions to anesthesia.

Definitely sounds like symptoms of a reaction to the pain meds. I really dont understand why vets prescribe pain meds for a neuter. I have fostered many dogs through neuter surgeries and within a day the are totally normal. The pain meds usually do more harm than good. The only time I would consider pain meds after a neuter would be if the testicles didn't drop and they had to go into the abdomen and even then I would hesitate. The pain injection that the vet gives after the surgery is really all they need.

I had never even heard of a vet giving pain meds for a spay or nueter until I joined this board. For both of mine they told me I could give a dose of baby Benadryl to help inflammation and itching at the suture spot. But mine were so groggy for the rest of the day they never even whined and they were perfectly fine after.

The blood in the stool would really concern me, though.

I also don't agree with the pain med thing and have never given them. My bet is that the pain meds are what are causing his stomach/bowel issues. Stop the meds and call your vet!!

Starting to get better

Thanks for all your advice and input. He almost died, when he started eating today it was a welcome relief. I don't trust Vets anymore....(they did it with a laser) and was supposed to be less evasive and less bleeding....yeah right!)
My next Boxer will keep is jewels thankyou very much...LOL

So what was wrong? Was it the meds? Or a complication with the surgery? I know you are upset (and rightly so) but don’t swear off neutering. What happened to you is NOT typical. Neutering has many benefits (to the health of the dog & to society). Besides having all my personal dogs and all my foster dogs neutered/ spayed I also volunteer at a Boxer Rescue that places over 800 boxers a year. Every dog that goes through our doors is spayed or neutered. The only complication I have ever seen is a slight infection at the incision site. And even that is rare… In my opinion having your pets spayed/ neutered is part of being a responsible pet owner.

I am sorry that you have a bad experience and I am glad your boy is recovering.
