Bad Reaction to neutering

I'm glad he is recovering! What was the complication? I agree that part of being a responsible pet owner is to spay/neuter our pets. Those 'jewels' can cause a lot more problems then most people realize. Not only can they contribute to the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation, they can cause health problems and stats show that over 80% of serious dog bites are inflicted by un-neutered males. IMO, the only moral, socially responsible option is to neuter. I know you had a scare but neuter complications are very rare!

I believe that vets give pain meds because it is expected by the owner.. like 'Oh, that must really hurt.. doesn't he need pain meds?' After awhile they just auto-prescribe it for every patient. We didn't give them to Elliot, but he came home with them after his neuter as an automatic thing.

I totally agree. I placed a dog a few months ago with a family. The dog had recently been spayed but was already 4 or 5 days post op when they picked her up. They asked me if she had pain meds and I said "no, she is fine & doesn't need anything" so they took her to their vet and got pain meds. I couldn't believe their vet would even be willing to give the meds that many days later but they did.
