Hello -

My 7 year old boxer, Hector, has recently been showing signs of what we think are seizure like symptoms. Early one morning my fiance, Josh, was getting ready for work when he knocked over a fan near Hector's bed. Hector being easily spooked jumped up and away (even though it was no where close to hitting him). When my fiance looked at him he was starting to fall over a bit almost like he was losing his balance. Josh was able to hold him up and get him sitting but hector seemed dazed for a few minutes after. We had a similar incident again when Hector got excited from police lights outside the house. Now we have had a few more incidents and it is looking like it is getting worse. When he walks on our hardwood floors now it is almost like his back legs are about to slip out from under him. When he jumps off of the furniture his legs just don't have the stability it used to.

The most recent two incidents have been the worst. He was excited because he thought someone was at the door (we were at his "grandparents" house who also own 2 other dogs that he spends a lot of time with) and when he ran back from looking at the door all the dogs sort of tangled up and we saw hectors back legs completely go out and he starts falling to the floor and onto his side. We always make sure to run to him and try and ease him to the ground and sit there with him for a few minutes until he looks likes he's not so spaced out anymore. This exact thing happened again when he got spooked from a lamp falling.

I am not sure what to do. He doesn't seem in pain but he also doesn't seem like his old self. We noticed this all started happening right after I had my son. I am not sure if this could be linked or not but thought it could be relevant information. The vet thinks he could potentially just be getting old or that he has a heart issue and believes he is having seizures when this happens but I am not fully convinced. He recently recovered from a terrible throat infection that we thought was going to possibly take Hector's life. These episodes started happening right after that. He still eats his treats but takes down half the amount of food a day that he used to. He never runs around anymore or asks to play. He just cuddles up to me and baby and sleeps most of the day away.

I am so sorry this is so long but this is my Fiance's best friend and as much as I hurt to see my poor dog like this it is killing Josh. If anyone has any advice or seen anything like this before any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

See if you can get Hector an appointment with a neurologist. Most likely you will need a referal from your vet. If there is none in your town, there should be a vet neurologist at your state's vet school. With both back legs unsteady, this seems like DM.

Hector likely has less energy as he knows he is unsteady and is aware of his limitations. I lost our Autry one year ago to a brain tumor. He lost all balance on his left side. Standing to eat on wood floors didn't work. I put carpet under everything. Borrowed area rugs and remnants from friends. When walking I used a harness as I could right him and let him fall into me.

Keep us posted.

I am sorry to hear about Hector!

The first thing would be a trip to the vet! A couple of things that come to mind are Degenerative Mylopothy (sp) or maybe a brain tumour. :( It could be a million other things. It could just be a infection of some sort or a pulled muscle. You need to get him checked out.

Good luck!

I'm so sorry about Hector :( I agree with the other posters- def needs to see a neurologist if you can manage it. If nothing shows up in preliminary xrays they will probably suggest having an MRI done. DM, brain tumor, GME, and vestibular disease are all up there as possibilities, among other things. I went through it with my last boxer so I know from experience that you can really work yourself up researching. In the meantime it would be helpful to Hector if you could give him some matts to cover the slippery surfaces and please please please be careful with steps. If his balance is off and his legs are slipping you really should be doing stairs with him or keep him from doing larger flights entirely. Best of luck and please keep us posted.

My girl has had the same thing recently. Also 7 yrs old. We have a new 2 year old boxer boy that we took in 6 months ago. This all started after we got him. Just wondering, have you been able to figure anything out?

My Mia was just recently diagnosed having a heart tumor. After having one of her "bad" days when she felt better, I noticed her back legs were very weak. They were very lame but amazingly she was still able to get around, gently. I called the vet and they told me it was most likely caused from a bleed from her tumor. About a week later her legs were a lot better. Take your pup to the vet. Boxers are very prone to tumors and its better to know what youre dealing with asap. Good luck and God bless!
