Awful Stinky Breath - Help!!

Hello All,
Our 4yr old female boxer Kayla has horrendous breath!! It's started in the spring and is still with us...ugh. It smells like rotting fish.
We took her to the vet's for a checkup and he checked her teeth & gums, and her stool is normal. He thought she may have gotten into some stagnant water or something else....but we've kept a serious eye on her and kept her on leash since to be sure and we've ruled this out.
So now does anyone know a trick to "freshen" up our darling Kayla??

Could he be digging and getting into anything like fish? My husband fishes alot and buries the carcasses (sp?) after he filets the fish. Or maybe garbage or a kitty litter box.

Have you tried a dentabone? I haven't used one myself but have seen talk of them here on BW.

Charcoal biscuits, Greenies, and mint/parsley cookies do the trick with us. We also brush our girls teeth with all natural toothpaste weekly. I make the mint/parsley cookies myself but the other stuff can be purchased through JBPet, Fosters and Smith or a dog bakery.

The more they chew the better their breath will be too.

Also, our babies LOVE fruit, so I find feeding them a few peices of orange helps a good deal too.

One of mine had really fishy breath for a while & then I noticed he was doing some "butt munching". I asked the vet about this, he said try putting more fiber into his diet. I did just that with a little Scient Diet "WD" (high fiber) mixed in to his regular food & treats of fibrous things like celery & shredded wheat (no frosting ).

Seems to have helped a good deal. No more "butt munching" & no more fishy breath as a result.

I have the same horrific "fish-mouth" problem with my boxer, Sweetie, and a vet told me that sometimes their breath will stink because of the saliva that gets trapped in their flappy "jowls". He suggested wiping the inside of her mouth out with a warm wash cloth, really trying to reach the nooks and crannies where gunk can accumulate. It has helped alot, whereas brushing her teeth, feeding her breath mints & doggie bones etc., did not help. Good Luck!

This is going to disgust many of you but it is part of the dog world. Anyway all dogs have anal glands that secrete a "juice" usually when they are using the bathroom but it can happen at any time. This secretion has a fishy horrible smell and if the dog licks the secretion their breathe in turn smells. I had this problem with a boxer in my past and since finding out about this gland I manually empty it to prevent it from secreting on my floor, bed, etc... My vet taught me how. Now I am sure all of you want to sit down to a big dinner after reading this!
