you guys might want to pick a different park. I live about a mile from that park. It was amazing when it first opened, but it is basically a humungous mud puddle now. The area is a storm water overflow facility for the city of decatur, that they turned into a dog park. When it first opened it was great and I went there like 4 times a week. One weekend in november I went and there was a mud pit at the lowest point. The next weekend it was a puddle. It just got progressively worse and worse, until most of the park was a watery muddy mess. I stopped going in december because I had to give Sascha a bath every time we came home. They aren't allowed to do anything to stop the water from accumulating there because it is still technically this overflow facility. They are looking into some other options, but they haven't done anything yet. But with all of this rain that we've had this week, I can imagine that it's pretty bad there right now. I know that when they opened that park, they opened two others in decatur, but I don't think that either is completely fenced in... btw, I'm so bummed that I can't bring Sascha out to play. My parents are coming to visit this weekend from New York. They did say they wanted to go to the dog park though, so maybe I'll be able to get them to go with me. Anyway, if I come up with any other location ideas I'll speak up. I'm sorry I didn't catch this thread sooner so I could have given you more of a warning.

I've never been to these but, heres some info on the other two decatur dog parks:
ADAIR DOG PARK, in Adair Park. Easy access from Trinity Avenue near the DeKalb History Center's historic complex. Limited street parking only. Please respect the property of homeowners. Fence and natural boundaries; not totally enclosed.

New Brook Run Dog park just opened in Dunwood
Thanks for the information on Oakhurst EricaG. I've been about 4-5 times and haven't had problems with mud, but never in periods of heavy rain like this week. The rain we've seen this week has been nonstop until today so I agree we shouldn't take chances with Oakhurst.
So moving right along... no reason for a change of venue to spoil our bash! As it happens I came across an article in the AJC from 1/12/2006 that they just opened a new dog park in Dunwoody called the Brook Run dog park. It's 2.5 acres and the whole area is really nicely done from what I can tell on the web site that shows drawings of the plans from last year - http://www.dunwoodynorth.org/brookrun/. Anyway, more importantly it just opened so I'll make a few calls tomorrow to make sure it's fenced, confirm that it's open to any and all, and to get an idea of what type of crowd to expect. In the meantime, please chime in if Dunwoody works for everyone. Sorry about the change in venue late in the game.

Dogs can legally escape their leashes and freely roam 2.5 acres in a newly created section of Brook Run Park in Dunwoody.
The "off-leash dog area" officially opens at 11 a.m. Saturday with a ceremony including CEO Vernon Jones.

I think with a bunch of boxers on the loose we should shoot for totally enclosed, which is why Oakhurst sounded nice.
