I think I'm going to do a one last ditch effort and give him potato (avoiding grains) and ground beef (he can't have chicken).

Does the type of potato matter? For example, are russet potatoes better than red potatoes?

I am actually taking my puppy in today for the same thing...and I have been advised that it could be an overgrowth of bad bacteria in their stomach...so we'll be finding out more today. Will let ya know if I learn anything

I'm sorry you are having so many problems with your pup. I know the feeling believe me. Lucy has HUC and for months she had chronic soft stool and diarreha. Once diagnosed we treated her and changed her diet to raw. This was the ONLY thing that works for her. However she cannot have traditional prey model raw, she needs veggies for fiber. Since you are already feeding a top quality food and don't mind paying the money for it, have you thought about a commercial raw? Lucy eats Sojo's Complete dehyrdrated raw turkey and sweet potato. We add a small amount of other raw meat protein to each meal. Any variation from this and we are back to soft stools. This food is expensive but as far as we are concerned it's worth every penny! Also for a fiber supplement Honest Kitchen has something called Perfect Form, it's amazing! Good luck!

Yes, use russet. I peel about half the skin off (leave some for the fiber) and boil & mash. I have had good luck with this method.

I'm not thrilled about the idea of raw as Tyson has been known to swallow things whole (i.e. toys) and did have a bowel obstruction as a puppy. If I fed raw, I would need to be able to grind it or serve it in small manageable pieces that he wouldn't choke on.

As you mentioned, I've been shelling out a lot of $$ for his kibble for several years now (not to mention my other 2 dogs), so the cost concern is the least of my worries. Obviously I'd prefer to not spend more than I need to, but I want what's best for him. So while I'm not thrilled about raw, if I exhaust all other options and that's the only way for him to have solid poo then I'll have to look into it more.

That all being said, I have a gut feeling that he's allergic to something in the food, and that's the root cause of this problem. He used to have chicken and dairy as a puppy, and now can't handle it. I wouldn't be surprised if now he can't tolerate the fish. Wouldn't that be a kicker.

I'll keep you all updated!

Yes, keep us posted!

I've got Winston on Acidophilus, 1/2 of a 1 billion culture pill w/ breakfast and 2 tsp of Psyllium with each meal. I've also changed him over to TOTW praire... His poops got more solid just about over-night which was something I hadn't seen in months. I account this to the fiber.... but they have an odd gelatinous quality... not quite normal solid. and he's pooping a ton! Prozyme is on the way from amazon. A lot of changes recently that I'm not normally a fan of, but I am following in the footsteps of previous advice here and it seems to be helping. I'd like to think I can wean him off the supplements down the road, but we'll see.

Commercial raw or premade raw is usually ground up. There are no large pieces.

THere are no large pieces in Sojo's Complete. You just add water and when it's mixed it actually looks like a stew.

Thanks for the updates about raw. I guess I hadn't researched it enough to know that it's ground up. That makes me much more open to the idea!

After a few meals on just potato and ground beef, Tyson's stool has improved some more, but it's still soft. I'm going to give it at least a few more days and see if it continues to improve. I think I've seen more improvement (so far) than I did with the psyllium and acidophilus, but now this makes me think that maybe indeed he can't have kibble.

If that's the case, I think Sojo's Complete seems like a good option!!

Kibble..ugh! We did try to switch Lucy to kibble at one time, and we really did give it an honest shot, slow change over, etc. The results were disasterous! Lucy is definitely one dog that cannot have kibble. Mancin just may be another.

Update: Tyson is still on potatoes and ground beef. His stool is about medium. It's not perfect, but it's also nothing like it was before. The dog food store I normally get my dog food from carries Sojo's Complete, so I'm going to check that out this weekend and see if I can wean him to that.
