Are two boxers more work than one?

Tyson is 13 months old now, and I have been considering getting another boxer. A female so that tryson can have a friend to play with, so that hes not bored when I cant play with him. I have no desire at all to ever breed them, so that has nothing to do with this. I just though that tyson would prefer a female playmate. I know Ill be spending more money on food and such, but how much more work is two boxers over just the one that I have now. I really do want to get another one, but I want to make sure that Im not getting over my head here. Can anyone that has been in a similar situation and decided to take on another boxer, please give me some feedback.

Also this may seem sellfish, lol, but tyson follows me everywhere, all over the house, and I love it. Its so cute. If I have another boxer, I dont want to have to compete for tysons attention. I guess Im asking will bring him a playmate into the house make him less affectionate to me?

One final thing, Tyson can sometimes cause the house to stink. I bathe him regularly and clean the house to keep the odor down, but honestly will two boxers in the house be double the dog odor?

I do really want another boxer, I just want to make sure I know what Im getting into. Thanks.

Well two dogs is obviously more work, bathing, feeding, etc, plus it's double the feces, double the vet bills, double the food, so it will be double the bills, but yes it's double the attention as well. Dogs like to play with each other yes, but they also want to play with you and get that attention from you too.

If your only reason for getting another Boxer is for Ty to have a playmate, then personally I wouldn't do it. You should get another dog because YOU want another dog. The new dog will want your attention too, and will want that one on one time with you too, yes my dogs play together sometimes, but they will also want to play with you and get pets from you, etc.

Just make sure that YOU have the time for 2 dogs, whatever love and attention, vet bills, food, etc that you give Ty, double that, if you have that kind of time and money and still want the other dog then go for it, if not then it's probably a bad decision.

Maybe you could foster for a local Boxer rescue and that would be a good "test" on if you could handle 2 Boxers without dealing with the financial aspect of it (minus food) plus you get to help a dog in need.

Thanks for the reply. Im not wanting another boxer just because I want Tyson to have a playmate, if anything Im using that as an excuse because I want one! lol. Yea I thought of doing the boxer foster thing to try it out. I dont really want a rescue, just because Ive spent so much on tyson's vet bills for misc health issues that I really want my second boxer to come from a very reputable breeder. This will give me alot more piece of mind.

I haven't noticed that the work is so much more than it was before. The money of course I have noticed. But I went into it with open eyes.
As far as playing with each other my two keep each other occupied a good portion of the time. My main issue is that they do not like to share mine and DH's attention. They tend to be very jealous of sugars and lovin. But we just make sure that everyone gets the same amount and just go from there.
I have personally been nothing but happy with our decision to bring my little princess into the family.

Now that Kona is 10mths I don't think that I notice much more work although it has doubled my walking time for the day as I walk them separately so they get some time apart from eachother. Of course, while Kona was a little puppy it was a lot of work esp. until she was about 6-7mths. There is a difference in the affection but only because they are both so full of love and get a little jealous but we just ignore the pushing and shoving.

We got Kona because DH thought Kilby wanted a friend. I knew she didn't...if you get another pup do it because you want to not because you think your boy is lonely.

On the odour front.. Kilby never really smelled before and while Kona rolls around in mud/dirt and gets a little stinky from time to time I can't smell dog in our place (nor can our friends). Although, all the play biting has lead to some bad breath ;)

Well we are different to everyone else who has answered. We brought Kymba as a mate for Cooper because we had decided to move to Australia and he was coming but we thought the whole journey and quarantine would be easier on him with a mate. Knowing how Cooper is and hates being on his own its was the best thing we ever did for him and us. Kymba is a great dog and she adds a huge amount of love in our family.
I find now they are a bit older they are no more work than one dog and they hate being apart from each other. But when Kymba was a puppy and Cooper was 12 months old they were very much hard work. I wouldn't change having them both and I think we will always be a two dog house from now on.

In all honesty, I was against getting a second boxer because I've never had two dogs at once, but my boyfriend REALLY wanted another. I just looked at it as more work, double the money, etc. BUT, I am sooo happy we got a second, and now I cannot imagine not having two. Yes, the bills increased, so you need to keep that in mind, but having a constant companion is the best thing that ever happened to Kaia. And her affection for myself or my boyfriend has not decreased any at all. She still follows us everywhere! The best is that we get from Boomer what we don't get from Kaia, and vice versa. And really, no, I have not noticed the workload to increase all that much, and whatever it has, it's well worth it.

I never thought I would want another one in the house, but now I don't think I will ever be without two.

Of course, you have twice the mess, bills, etc.
But, all the benefits outweigh all that... And the love the dogs develop for each other is phenomenal. Sandy still follows me around and Napoleon follows dh, but they are there for each other... always.

Good Luck with your decision.

Bff!

Yeah, I will never be without two either! It's soooo funny how different my two are even though they are brothers. Vinny and Ozzy get along great! We have never had any issues with them. Just be very careful with your new puppy at the beginning because your boxer might think he's a toy at first. Ozzy did this with Vinny so we had to keep a close eye on him. Finally, Ozzy realized that Vinny was his buddy and now they can't be apart for one minute. Best friends Forever!

I got Bo when our Bella was one year old. Let me tell you, it was a lot of work! Bo from the beginning was a instigating little tyrant! And Bella turned right back in to a puppy again. They get into twice the trouble! The bills do increase as with the time you have to commit to them. But its worth it! They can't stand being apart for any time at all! I sometimes take Bo with me to different jobsites as he loves to play fetch on the new artificial turf fields we install, and loves to guard the trailers as if they were his! When we get home, Bella is waiting at the end of the driveway for us with her but touching her face. My wife tells me that she has been waiting all day for us. But when they get together at the end of the day, its a play session until its bedtime!
