Boy did we have a scare! My Allie 9 months was chewing on a rawhide when she ended up swallowing the whole thing, when my daughter 11years old noticed that Allie was trying to breathe she reached inside Allie's mouth to grab the rawhide when Heather couldn't reach it she did the Heimlich maneuver on her and she got it out . Heather is my Hero :) She was never taught this either . Heather said if it works for Humans why not dogs . I just thought I had to share this with all of you . Joann boxerfdl Fawn, female , no crop love her dearly

Thank goodness that Heather was there and knew what to do. Boxers are so silly sometimes trying to swallow things that are too big. That is why I always say that boxers should only get rawhide and pigs ears when they are being supervised.

I'm glad everything turned out okay.

I have also had that happen

All of my boxer`s past and present had a tendancy to try and swallow rawhide just as soon as it got slimmy enough. I stopped giving them to my past dogs because Dutch used to get mean when I tried to take it away when I wasn`t going to be able to watch them. I started to give my present dogs with hope they would be different but they too have almost gotten them down if I wasn`t watching every minute. I only Give them the huge Bones(3FT long) because it takes them a lot of time to get them unrolled. People in the stores stare at us when we are checking out, and some have said "What have you got at home Tigers?" we just smile and say nope, no cats.;)

Are rawhides safe? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
My poor Samson had a terrible tear in his intestines or stomach (vet wasn't sure) from those damn things, poor baby couldn't keep anything down, not to mention a huge vet bill for us. They can also harbor nasty bacteria after chewed on. I opt to give them a good nubbed toy to satisfy their chewing needs, and a lamb/rice doggie treat when they need a change from the ol' kibble. Sorry to be blunt, I am anti-rawhide and pig ears. I am so glad your pup was okay, must have been quite a scare, and give your daughter a hug for thinking so quickly, she is a hero.

JoAnn owned by Samson 4/7/99 my bootiful and Athena 2/9/00 Miss Athene to us.

Lexi does not do this but Baxter has given us a few scares. He loves them so much!! We never let them ingest the rawhides because of bacteria but we do allow them to chew on them. When they get slimy and mushy..we cut that piece off and allow him to go at it again. Mine do fine with this. It is only the mushy parts they try to swallow. We never give rawhide chips anymore because he gets those soggy in not time and immediately tries to swallow them..mine only get the large knotted ones. Knuckle bones are also good for chewing :)

No, rawhides are not safe. Rocky, however, loves them. I always reccomend getting the rawhides with the knots on both side. Supervision is always a must with all bones and toys. You never know what will happen.

We don't give rawhides any longer.

Striker was getting sick from them. As soon as we took the bones away he was fine. We give them nylabones now, and they love them just as much.

Our neighbor's dog almost died from a rawhide. He was choking on it after it was all slimy and chewed up, and thank god my neighbor heard the noise, he ran over and had to stick his hand down Zach's throat to get the piece out.

So, after Christmas, we have tons of those HUGE bones....and decided we weren't going to let the dogs have them anymore.

I understand Raw Hide. Should I treat Pig ears the same way?

What other kind of bone can you give them? Those meaty basted bones that they just knaw on and dont try and swallow?

No WAY

Sidney has never had raw hide but she did have a pig ear ONCE... She chewed it for hours until it was small enough to fit in her mouth.. I was watching her and she ran to the kitchen with it by the time I had got out there she was making this horrid coughing sound.. She had it stuck in her throat ! Needless to say she does NOT get those any more

I have only heard bad things about raw hides...the dog can get choked, they dog can't digest them, they can build up in the intestines, once the dog swallows them they go no where and just sit in the stomach, etc, etc. I'm sure all may not be true (the sitting in the stomache part, some dogs would be full of them by now) but rather to be safe than sorry I don't give them to my dogs. I have bought large meaty bones before but those scare me also so I stick w/ toys.:)
