I agree with Holden's Mom. Try the Dremel. It takes a little for them to get used to it but it is worth it. All three of our dogs will prctically fall asleep while I trim their nails.

Dremel! Don't get the dremel brand, get a black and decker or some other cheaper brand. We bought ours for like $40. It's SO much easier and next to impossible to cut their quick. Have someone else hold him and use distraction w/ pb or whatever he happens to like. He'll relax after a minute or so. Conner was really bad, but this works.

Oh - get a mask (like from the hardware store) so that you don't breathe in all the fingernail filings. That grossed me out. :)

If they aren't too long or if your dog hates the noise like mine, use a nail file. It also helps if you are calm yourself because he might be picking up on your nervousness in doing it. I would also give breaks in between feet until you can work up to all four. Make sure it stays a positive experience.

Well, to tell you the truth, Tre is 10 1/2 months old. I've stopped trimming his nails since he was about 5 months old.

The trick is, I take him for daily walks. They naturally get trimmed by themselves on the sidewalk.

I still check his nails weekly. Just to make sure. :)

I wait until Hobart is asleep to do his (usually at night when we're hunkered down in front of the tv).
I agree with Hobart's. Baron passes out on the bed about an hour before nighty night and that's when I go at him with the nail clippers. We have a collie and she despises having her nails cut at any time. We have to muzzle her and it takes 2 to get even one paw done. Every one is different.

I agree!! Dremel, Dremel, Dremel.

Boo wouldn't let me near her toenails--even trying to bite me if I so much as pulled her toes apart. Now, she sleeps right through it.

I never need to cut my dogs nails. I guess I am lucky they seem to file them down on there own when we run around for a while.:)

I have always trimed sarges nails my self but his are pretty easy to do they are white so i can tell how far to trim them, he's pretty used to me doing it, but sometimes I have to almost sit on him he's such a evilicon dog! Just try to find someone whos willing to help you hold him still while you do it. and they say dremmels do work pretty good and there is less chance of the nail splitting. You'll do just great! and he will get used to you doing it.

I used to cut Tessa's nails while she slept, but that only lasted while she was a puppy. Definitely try the peanut butter! I have my dh hold the spoon of pb while I cut her nails. She's too busy licking up the pb to notice. I can get 3 paws done quickly. Sometimes, by the 4th paw, it's time to add more pb! :)
