My son is 13 and he has suffered since he was 4! We were referred to a neurologist and he told me that newborn babies can have migraines!! He also said that there is no concrete cure for migraines and no known cause...but triggers seem quite common (stress, chocolate, caffeine, processed foods, cheese).
When Alex gets one, which is at least once a month, (in fact he was home on Monday with one), he either vomits or gets very close to it. He has taken migraine meds but nothing has worked for him so far. He hides away in a darkened room, quite, cool cloth on his forehead and prays for sleep to take over! He's also on meds for ADD and with that comes a sleeping pill at night. He is finding now that the sleeping pills are making the migraines worse and more often. He had a flu ahile back and I gave him a gravol. He had a migraine after that for 2 days without any relief! He goes to the doctor on the 9th and we will find out why it seems that medication that has a "drowsy" effect worsens the migraines.
Also, on a few occasions, lavender drops (aromatherapy) on the pillow has helped, if the migraine is not full blown! :) And, if I am not mistaken, I have heard that peppermint drops on the pillow work wonders too.

You know.. DUH me. Forgive me.. I'm in Atlanta for the week and not at home to double check what stuff is called. The liquid or crystal form of the bath stuff is called Batherapy. It comes in lavender or another scent (the lavender is purple and the other scent is green in color). They both don't smell that great.. but it's something that grows on you. I sat there for 10mins the first time I bought it.. trying to figure out which one smelled better because they're both strong but I was desperate for relief so I went with Lavender.

I've just read this post and wanted to add that my husband and I both take medication called Paramax for our migraines (his are food orientated - cheese and chocolate, mine are usually over tiredness and bright lights from night driving).

It's a medication you can buy at the pharmacies in New Zealand, you don't need a prescription for it but it is a controlled medication so they take your name and address for their register.

The best part of it is the nausea usually goes in about 10 minutes and after that your head seems to stop feeling quite so "life threatening".

Unfortunately I spent last week with a not-quite full blown migraine brought on by heat and being nearly four months pregnant I couldn't take anything for it. Does anyone know of any pregnancy friendly migraine fixes? The cold face cloth and dark room just didn't really do it for me!

Xenaprincess, I'm curious id you checked radiantrecover web site?
dr.DesMaisons (PhD) make sense on her studies.

I suffer from migranes for more than 20 years, and after being under a neurologist care for more than 3 years, finally I got some relief with prevention medication taken daily and Midrin (that is NOT a narcotic) when I get some simptoms. I'm also depressed, but not help on that department yet...

Wishing all of you good health and you find a way to keep the pain away.

I sure do feel for you all there is nothing worse than a migraine. My grandmother and mother both had them begin in their late 20's on into their early 40's. So yep you guessed it, I have them too now. Ive seen a neurologist(sp?) and he gave me Maxalt which works perfect for me most of the time! I have recently begain having stress related migraines and he gave me Fiorcet. Its hard to tell the difference between which is a stress headache or a migraine. Best of luck to you!

My Mother got them for years. Once or twice a month and they were debilitating. She finally saw a specialist who systematically manipulated her food intake in roder to gauge the cause. Hers are caused by yellow cheese. She stopped eating it and no more migraines. Other common food causes are red wine, chocolate, processed foods, etc. Good luck!

I had recently done a post about my migraines. I finally went to the doctor today and he gave me Midrin. Hopefully this will help.

Another option

For almost two years I had migraines just about every day. I was finally referred to a neurologist who diagnosed them as atypical migraines. They're not associated with the typical triggers such as food or monthly hormonal changes. He prescribed Topomax which is an older drug generally used in the treatment of seizures but was found to be useful in controlling migraines as well. Once we got my dosage right I've had very few break-thru headaches. But I have to take it every day. I know some people wouldn't like that idea but I'd rather do that than live with a migraine everyday.

I manage a dental clinic and have seen many patients who experience severe headaches that their doctor cannot cure. In many of these cases the problem is jaw related. TMD is a disorder of the muscles around the jaw. If you get headaches, pain in neck or shoulders, or dizziness this could be an issue to discuss with your dentist. It certainly is worth a try.

Personally I have been headache free since a dentist resolved my TMD 4 years ago.
