Any experience with Zonisamide?

Hey all,

I have a 3 year old Boxer named Roman that has been experiencing seizures recently.

His first seizure was Columbus weekend, and was a short "Grand Mal." I brought him to the vet who did a checkup and basically explained not to jump into medications and just watch him.

Two weeks later, Roman had another seizure without warning. Again, it was a "Grand Mal" but no clusters, or any epilepticus. The vet explained he is at a prime age for epilepsy and it could very well be idiopathic epilepsy.

This past Saturday Roman had another seizure. They seem to be getting worse. He lost bladder control, and afterwards went into mini-seizures where he would salivate and stare, which eventually let to a second full-on seizure.

This time I took him to a 24-hour hospital closer to my house which features more specialty services such as cardiology and oncology. I have been worried about a brain tumor, despite no symptoms. We saw someone in neuro first which suggested keeping him overnight for observation, running bloodwork, and starting an anti-convulsant.

The bloodwork has not come back yet, and Roman was sent home with a prescription for Zonisamide (100mg) 3x in the morning and 3x in the evening. Within 2 hours of having Roman home he had another seizure. A few hours later he was asleep on my lap on the sofa, and had another seizure. Although the first seizure was particularly frightful, this will likely stay with me. He woke up and looked at me just kind of staring. His head began to shake but he just sat there looking at me for about 20 seconds as I spoke softly and tried consoling him. During that time he lost consciousness and began violently seizing in his own urine all over the sofa and I was absolutely helpless. Worse yet, he seems to have lost all his personality upon coming home and I am concerned that this new medication will just make him a walking zombie. His appetite has been unaffected yet he shows little interest in anything and I have yet to see his little nub wagging.

I let Roman sleep in bed with me (I occasionally do) to keep a close eye on him. Sure enough at about 5AM he woke up for about 15 seconds before seizing in the bed.

At this point I am incredibly frustrated. I have read up on the forums that these episodes are relatively painless but the heartbreaking confusion and hurt you see them go through afterwards is just as hard. I have put thought into picking his food, making sure that he has a good diet, and gets regular exercise and yet I feel that there has to be some explanation. The vet says that idiopathic epilepsy is relatively common amongst dogs- and this is about the age that they start to show symptoms.

I guess I am using this forum just to vent at this point, but I do have some questions for anyone with experience.

-Does anyone think it's possible to try to switch up the diet and see if it helps?

-Does anyone have any experience with Zonisamide?

-Are the symptoms of drowsiness-depression relatively temporary while he gets used to the meds?

Thanks for reading!

I am sorry I have no advice or experience BUT I will be starting my 4yr old on Zonisamide this weekend. same dose as Roman. He has been taking Phenobarbitol and potassium bromide for a year now and we are adding this hoping to see some additional improvement. I took my boy to the university of Knoxville and they told me that epilepsy can be very hard to get under control but once you finally get it under control it is usually easy to maintain. we are still working to get to that point. I hope you see some improvment.

Thank you "Joey's Mom" :)

Unfortunately, Roman had another about an hour ago.. very frustrating.

Where are you getting your meds from? I'm currently paying $73/month for the Zonisamide and I don't see it on 1800Petmeds... :(

:(

Poor Boy Roman, it will take a lttle time for his body to get used to the medicine so give it a little more time. I know this is very frustrating and hard when you have to watch your baby having seizures. I am not sure what king of blood work they did but you may have to have an MRI to see if there is a possible brain tumor. This is also very Expensive and depending on where you live could be a long distance to the nearest clinic that is capable of doing one. We had to travel 5 hrs for Joey to see a neurologist. There is several other possible causes. I pray for you that it is not a tumor. Once they diagnosed Joey with Canine epilepsy they told us that it can take some time to figure out the right dose and drug combination to get it under control. We are still trying to get them under control and we are seeing some improvement.

I did ALOT of searching before I started Joey on the Zonisamide because of the cost. One pharmacy where I live quoted me $300 for a month supply :( but after calling EVERY pahrmacy with in an hours drive I found it @ Fred's for $35 a month. This drug is available @ "human" pharmacies, All you have to do is get your vet to call in the prescription. I could not believe the price differences.

So sorry you and your boy are going through this.
I witnessed one seizure with my girl prior to her thyroid diagnosis. Once meds were started she never had another one. I know how terribly frightening they are to watch and how helpless you feel.
In my girls case the seizure was related to her under functioning thyroid. Her numbers were well within normal range but I persisted and had a test run from Hemopet in California and it was determined she had thyroiditis and medication would help her thyroid. What we didn't know was it also caused her seizure. Many things can cause seizures but since you are dealing with a Boxer and he is at the prime age it should be worth considering.
Unless you specifically request a full blood panel FOR the thyroid, one that includes a TgAA test they WILL NOT test for this but rather do a "basic" thyroid test and more often than not a T4, free T4, T3 and free T3 is all that will be included. This basic test can and does miss additional problems.
Just putting this out there for you.

Her is another link about using ice packs to stop a seizure or to lessen their intensity.

zonisamide

Hi,
I've been a member of this board for about 10 years but don't post often. We lost both of our babies this year....Max passed away just this past weekend. They think he had a brain tumor, he had sudden onset seizures, major ones, at 9.5 years old. He had one on Saturday, we had to give him CPR because he stopped breathing completely, then on Sunday morning he had another one and left us suddenly. I say all that, to ask if any of you could use a supply of Zonisamide. We paid $230 for the perscription on Saturday, hoping it would help...and he only took 6 of the pills before we lost him. I hate to let them go to waste since they are so expensive. Please message me if I can send them to you, I have 114 Zonisamide capsules, 100MG.

thanks,
Leigh Anna

@ lthompson35 I am sorry for your loss :( I hope that you can find someone to give the zonisamide to. I am not sure that you will be able to give it to anyone here on bw due to not being ablte to share personal contact info with BUT if you cant then maybe you could contact your local vet, shelter or resuce group and ask them if they know of anyone in need of the midicine. I am sure they would be very happy to help! It can be VERY exspensive and I am sure whoever you could find to give it to would greatly appreciate it :)
