Another questionable Pet Owner

I met a woman in Petco the other day who happened to mention that she was buying bitter apple spray to spray in her newly adopted dog's face when he pulled on the leash and/or showed any agression towards men. Of course I told her that the product was only to be used as a deterrent for chewing, and that the store sold gentle leaders or haltis that would prevent her pooch from pulling. I also told her that he was probably leary of men because he had probably been abused by one in the past, and that it might take some time for him to regain their trust. Wouldn't you know, I later saw this woman buy the bitter spray anyway. Some people should not be pet owners ~ Cathy

It is very sad to know that some people still use such harsh means of "training" for their pets. How do they expect the pet to trust them and be loyal to them if they aren't respecting him/her? Kudos to you for trying to steer her in the right direction. At least you can sleep at night knowing that you tried to inform her of the correct way to train. Maybe when she gets home and thinks about it, she will change her mind!!

What an idiot woman!? I have used bitter apple in the past to prevent chewing and even after the spray sitting for a few minutes, my dogs would have such severe sneezing attacks, that I felt terrible! I can't imagine spraying them in the face. Next thing you know, this dog will not be aggressive to just men!

There are so many people out there that are not fit to be parents (of fur or skin kids). It is so sickening.

Elyse- You are so right on it is very sickening. I'm afraid to listen to the news on a day to day basis seems like that is all you hear about is how people mistreat animals and especially children. Lets see today there was a 4 year old that died from being in a locked car too long. Let's see what tomorrow will bring. It doesn't seem to ever end and I praise my sister for her work she works with children services I don't know how she does that from day to day I would find it way too depressing.

wouldn't that maybe make the situation worse...seeing as everytime she sees a man now she'll associate him with an awful taste in her mouth!

Its people like her that make me realize why everyday I like my dogs alittle more and people alittle less!!!!

That is cruel. Just yesterday someone told me that when he walks his dog and the dog pulls he hits the dog's butt with a leather leash. I thought that was cruel too. MEAN OWNERS.

Hmmm...what I wonder is where do some people get these ideas from?? I think I'd have found that lady/man's cart and thrown in some books on obedience and walking/training your own dog, maybe they'd get the hint then.

*side note*
I think justice is genetically engineered to "ignore" bitter apple. When she chewed on our cocker spaniel we were told to spray some on the cocker's fur to deter Justice from chewing on her. Ha! wouldn't you know it she loves the stuff! She licked it right off, without a care in the world. So, needless to say we stopped using it.

Using it in their faces is just wrong and evil!!!! I hope she has the spray bottle backwards one day and shoots herself with it.
