My husband and I adopted Daisy 3 weeks ago today. When we got her the old owner had her on PuppyChow. I desperately want to get her onto a better diet. I have always thought of PuppyChow as doggy junk food. She is 1-1/2 and beautiful. Yesterday she went to the vet for a check-up, heatworm test and all her shots. She has some "dandruf" like flakes on her rear. I heard Omega3 oil in her food? Vet said she is a perfect weight, 57 lbs. She is on the petite side. the vet said to carefully watch her for lumps or bumps, as tumors/cancer is common in boxers. I want her to live a long healthy life. This is our first boxer baby. Vet was pushing Science Diet (that was what they sold there) We just moved before we got her, so this is a new vet to us. Anyone out there live in California Central Valley and can recommend a vet? We are in Tracy, CA. I am open to any and all suggestions from you all. Can you please help get me started?

Thank You!!

At 1 1/2 she needs to be off puppy foods. I fed Innova before switching to BARF. The ingredients in Innova are quite impressive. The only draw back is loose stools. I learned after I started feeding BARF that since Innova is made up of many ingredients it can take awhile for the dog to adjust. Getting them started on the food should be done very, very slowly. I switched mine to it over the course of a week...this was way too fast. I fed it for a month and Sheeba is the only one who started to finally have a more firm stool, Pru and Tyson's were still like water. I think there are others who are feeding Innova here on the list, maybe they can offer more info about the food.

I started feeding my three Wellness Super5mix about two months ago. The ingredient list is very similar to Innova, but I chose Wellness based on the lower calorie count per cup. I think most foods have around 400 and Innova had 600, or something.

I did my switch over 2-3 weeks, because I had a full bag of Iams when I happened into the area where they sell Wellness (might be hard to find). I have had no problems at all and am delighted to report less poopies in the yard and my guys almost never have loose stools which was almost an everyday occurance on Iams.

My brother just switched from Science Diet to Nutro, but he is still in the process of switching, so I can't give you a full report.

Bailey is on Nutro Natural Large breed puppy . I like that it is wonderful. He had to switch because he has food allergies. I love this food.

Hope that helps a bit :D

Flax seed oil is the miracle worker that put a stop to all our vet visits due to itchy, red, dry skin. Good luck!

I switched my dogs to Innova ( http://www.naturapet.com ) and did have some problems with Susie. They key is that it is very rich food and the switch should be made much MORE gradually than normally when switching food. I had to take about 1.5 months for Susie. Maggie adjusted almost immediately and had no problems, but Susie has a more delicate system. But, now we are fully converted to Innova and they are doing great. Great firm stools, smaller stools, almost NO gas anymore (if I lay off the treats) and fewer eliminations.

Good luck. Do a search on this site for Food and you'll find an incredible amount of information on this subject.
