Am I wrong on not wanting to vaccinate for distemper?

I stated that I did not want the booster for distemper and was told that was up to the vet and not me.

Anything to do with your dog is your decision, not any one else's. They can give you advice but the choice is your and it is most definitly not the vet's choice. I don't vaccinate my dog at all (nor my cat when I had her), the only thing my dog gets is the rabies shot.

I know here in the south we have PetMed. They come out to different places and offer low cost vaccines. I think Rabies is 3/5$. I can't remember which. I've never visited, but I've heard good things about them.

Vaccines

I am curious about your expirences with these. I have a skinkid with some issues that some link with vaccines. I don't know if it is the case or not, but I did do enough research to indicate to me that the preservatives used in the vacs could be quite toxic. For my puppy *soon* I want to make sure that he has everything that he needs to be healthy, but just like my skin kid, I would rather do without anything he doesn't absolutely need.

Any input would be appriciated

Yes, in SC they have the PetMed which moves all over the city and county offering $5 rabies and $7 DHLLP. But our 1st couple of years in SC we self-vaccinated. There's a dog food supply store that sells these, and is very reasonably priced, so that's the option we chose. My ex-BF knew how to administer shots so it worked out well for us. And you can obtain vaccines from companies that supply vets, breeders, etc...I work for the USPS and have seen some of the info come through Omaha Vaccines, I believe is one. But if you're not comfortable giving the shots yourself, I would try to locate a mobile clinic.

Thanks for all your response, well I didn't have to kennel Max for the weekend as my better half went and such. Anyway it isn't the money that is an issue, yet I think some of the vets rip us off on office visits. I just don't wish to give him anymore vaccines than are necessary. I may be wrong, but I thought distemper was more of a vaccine while they are a pup, if I am wrong please let me know. Max is home by hisself most of the time, with me. We may take him to a dog day care, but he is a true gentleman and we always find the time to play and excercise him. Any advice would be appreciated as this is a teaching site. Thanks to all.

My advice personally would be to have the distemper vaccine, but that's your personal choice. You would hate for him by some off chance come in contact with something and contract it. But if he's primarily at your home, under your care...this may not really be an issue. But I am under the impression that for your pup to go to day care that they must be fully vaccinated, it is in my area any way. Good Luck with your decision.

The best thing you can do for your boxer is to research vaccines and then make an educated decision.

I have my own opinions about the whole yearly vaccs. thing myself. Just do a search on "vaccine protocol". I think we over vaccinate.

I give puppy series, I do them myself, then I give them at a year and that's it for the yearly stuff. I began questioning it myself then did research.

Of course I don't have to kennel mine either.
