Am I the Only Paranoid One?

You know, with all these stories about dogs being taken for fighting, ( I wince just typing that) it reminds me of a video I saw a couple months ago. I think I was watching an awards show, because I rarely watch music videos but it was a normal "cool" video that the kids probably watch a lot today. And I remember I was INFURIATED when I saw it because there were two pit bulls ( I think they might have actually had them on the stage too) chained up and obviously put into a fighting scene.....ooooooo. I was sooooo mad after I saw that. You know, it's enough with the violence, drugs and everything else that they glorify, but that video made me sick! I was so very mad. What a horrible thing to convey to young people to make them think that is cool. Anyone else seen what i am talking about? I literally sat there with my mouth open shocked. I was even more shocked than everything else they put on TV now, but I just could not belive they were allowed to show that.

When did it become so uncool to grow up thinking compassion for all living things and being NICE and non violent was so bad? I just don't get it. It makes me want to live in the boonies.

Oh and in response to who is wondering if she should keep her doggie door. It depends on where you live. They provide lots of freedom and our previous house had one. We lived in the country and relatively safe but you never know, especially after what everyone has said here. But we then moved to a much more metropolitan area and I can't have a fence really high, so no doggie door. On one hand you can't let fear rule your life, but on another, it depends with how much you know about your city. Maybe try contacting the local police or news station and see if they have records of anything happening.

Doggie Doors

Doggie doors are great, if you live in a remote enough area. But never leave the doors open if you are not home. Not only could something happen to the dog (not just theft, but injury or poisoning) but someone could access your home via the doggie door.
I only use my doggie door when I am at home. When I leave the dogs alone, which is not very often, the dogs are left inside with no access to the outside.

Thanks for replying to my doggie door questions. I have to leave Baxter sometimes for 7 hours while I work. He is a year and 3 months old now and I guess he could hold it while I work. I have been leaving the door open for him while I am gone but it has always worried me. Now that I've hard all these stories, I think I may start closing the door when I am gone. We go out in the mornings so he shouldn't have problems holding it while I'm gone. I hate that I have to think this way, but I would be devastated if something happened to my baby!

How could they take them?

I was just wondering....I know that many boxers (or any dogs for that matter) are just as friendly & loving to strangers as they are for their owners, but what about the boxers who are very protective? How could someone steal a dog that was very protective of their property? I would think that as long as you feel comfortable that your dogs are not going to happily go off with anyone and will bark/growl at strangers trying to come into the backyard, then a doggie door would seem o.k. I mean, who would be stupid enough to try and steal a dog that would attack/defend themselve and their property from strangers???!!! Does this happen?

Again, it depends on where you live. If I lived in a densely populated area and wasn't sure about the crime in the area, then I would say no, but if I lived in an area that I felt was fairly safe then I would love to have a doggie door. My dream plan (for my next house) is to have a doogie door in the walk-out door in the basement (which the basement would be finished as a rec-room, doogie room). The dogs would spend the day down there, lounging until I came home and they would still have access to go outside and do their thing. I would, however, fence in the area (make a small "dog run") outside of the walk-out door so they would not have full reign of the yard. I never let Sega have full reign of the yard without my supervision only because he would destroy every living plant within reach and afterwards try and dig a hole to China! :p

Be very careful with a young boxer.....when I first got Prince people mistook him for a pitbull. It is better to be safe than sorry.

NOT Paranoid. In my childhood home in San Diego, we had two shitzu's go missing, and my aunt up the street "lost" her chihuahua. I wouldn't worry so much about an adult boxer as a puppy, but if someone wanted to steal an adult, they probably could. :(

Where there is a will, there's a way. A sedative laced steak would more than likely get any protective dog to settled down, at least eat the meat, and then pass out for the taking.

I'm sure these criminal types have many more ways in which to steal any dog they want to steal. Never underestimate these people. Just when you do, they've found another scheme.

Someone could easily steal my Boxer if they knew him. He sounds ferocious if someone comes up to the house, but once inside, if you pet him, he's your friend for life. My husband and I always joke around that our dog would let a burgaler steal our tv and anything else he wanted as long as he pet him!

Amy, I feel the same way. My dad had his first boxer stolen. Whoever stole his boxer, gave the dog meat with some kind of tranquilizer. My dad told me that everybody used to comment on how good looking his dog was. Well, when I walk Max, he gets a lot of compliments as well. People stop to ask if I'm going to breed him and if I did, how much would I sell the puppies for. Everytime someone stops me and Max to admire him, I get paranoid that they are going to steal him from me. It also depends on the person who is stoping me. Sometimes I get stopped by people that I would not trust in a dark alley, if you know what I mean. So don't think you are paranoid, you are just a good mom to your boxer.

I think that every good boxer or pitbull owner has to worry about this issue but at the same time you can't suspect EVERYONE of being a thief. Some people might just be admiring you boxer. I know that I tend to stare if I see a good looking dog. Also something that gives me a little reassurance is the fact that Tyson is almost full grown and most people aren't going to see a 70 pound dog and think about stealing it. Oh well keep being suspicious becuase when it comes to your babies you had better be safe than sorry but at the same time have a little more faith in your fellow men and women.
