Never too paranoid

Never, ever be too nervous about your dog being taken.

My dog was.:(

My Dip was in a fenced back yard. The fence was six feet high, with another two feet of barbed wire on top. The gate was locked with a three pound brass lock. I WAS HOME!!! I WAS JUST INSIDE THE DOOR TO THE YARD!!!

Dip went outside to go potty, and somehow, someone got her.

She has been missing for two months, two weeks, and four days, and counting.

I have hung fliers, rented a billboard, and gotten coverage on the front page of the Kentucky Post and three of the four major television stations here in Cincinnati. (They just did a follow up Monday with us, we were on the news again this morning.)

The Governor is looking into starting a task force that would come up with possible solutions to helping people who, like me, have had their babies taken.

I am crying as I type this.

Please, don't ever open yourself up to the pain that I have been living with for over two months. Watch your dogs, and don't think that it can't happen to you.

You aren't paranoid at all. I'm always afraid someone will get one of mine thinking they will be good fighting dogs and they love everyone, so they would probably go with anyone who would pet them. So, don't worry, your not the only one.:)

So-it sounds like I should not have a doggie door in my house when I have to leave my baby at home. Does anyone still use a doggie door? I feel bad leaving him and thinking he may have to go to the bathroom. But-that's better than having him stolen. Any suggestions? Very worried as I type...

maybe you're paranoid...

but i don't think so.

I live in a transitional (aka up & coming. or just plain poor) neighborhood and the comments I get every day are mainly of the "them's good lookin' bulldogs -- do you fight them?" school. this scares the bejesus out of me. luckily, a) i live very close to a semi-legitimate pit bull breeder (looks backyard, but registers his animals and has them health tested) and i don't think animal stealing goes over well here and b) my dogs really are scary and mean, at least to strangers, children, other dogs, etc. with very few exceptions, they're not friendly to unknown people & animals. at best they're aloof. mixed blessings, i guess.
they'll just have to be the envy of the local hoodlums. ;)

P.S. story to the contrary : Several years ago, my husband left Zolly attached by leash to a parking meter while he dashed into a local club to sign some paperwork for the electrical inspector and was gone for about 10 minutes. Zolly chewed through his leash and walked from the curb to the front of the club, which happened to be hosting Parliament Funkadelic that evening. Lucky for all of us, one of the musicians saw the chewed leash and the loose dog, assumed that he belonged to someone inisde the club, but didn't see my husband inside. it was a hot day, so he put zolly on the tour bus! after sound check, he and my husband met and the musician showed Chris where Zolly was -- napping on P-Funk's tour bus couch.

another story about my evil dog.

the neighborhood punks in the old 'hood kept making comments about daisy, usually followed by "you wanna sell her?" or "wanna give her away?" So one day my husband was having the usual exchange, daisy by his side, and he said "i'm tired of this. tell you what. if she'll go with you, she's yours. otherwise, i never want to hear another word." needless to say, daisy wasn't going anywhere. (I think she growled at the kid, actually)

You are not crazy at all. Our neighbors always tell us how good looking and well behaived our boys our, well one day Duke was out in the yard while we were doing some weeding and when we walked around the corner of the house one of the neighbors friends was trying to get Duke into their car! We no longer let anyone think the boys are friendly and we don't let them out of our sight for one second. There was also an incident in our town a few months ago where a families two huskies were taken from the kennel in their fenced in back yard and held for ransom. When the dog thiefs saw the police a the point they were suppose to meet the people for money they had the people who were holding the dogs for them turn them loose in the city. The dad dog was found the next day but his puppy was lost for weeks. Thank goodness the are both home safe now. So no we are not crazy, it's the rest of the people out there.:(

If you are crazy then I am crazy too.I am the same way. When people come to my house even to visit I always make sure I tell them maxiene is spayed and draico will be nutered soon and that they are chipped.I tell them I can find my dog any where by that chip.(the chip is unheard of here and people think it is like a locater or some thing.I dont see any reason to tell them any different. :D ).
My mother baby and dog sits for me when I am gone.I WONT leave them in the car for any reason. When I have to I try to make sure I can see them or check on them alot.

I guess we all need help! Its pretty good here where I live but a few years ago my friend was outside cutting her grass with her cockerspaniel and she went in to answer the phone(wrong number) when she came out her dog was gone. This was a dog that never left the yard. We searched, never found again. So it can be any dog. Any child, we should all beware.

You're definitely not paranoid. I love my dog, Odin, very much and am very protective of him. Boxers are beautiful animals and they get a lot of attention from people. It's natural to feel that way. I wouldn't worry about leaving him home alone, but I definitely would not chain him in front of a store or leave him in the car alone. Dogs get stolen all the time in front of stores. Also it's not safe, healthwise, to leave your dog in a car. When my husband and I go on vacation we usually leave him with this nice kennel. He likes it there, but it's me that has a problem leaving him. The first time we did it I sobbed like a mom dropping her kid off at school for the first time, so don't feel bad!
