Hello from Sunny Florida!!!

I brought our new boxer baby home yesterday morning and our first day together was fabulous! He's such a good boy! He is going outside to do his "bizniz" and is just as sweet as they come!!! Well night time comes and I am wondering if I will get any sleep at all. I know how puppies are!! The breeder gave me a security blanket for him (has his mom, grandma and sibs scent on it) and I set him up in the bathroom with a big blanket, his security blanket and all the amentities. Now this was only going to be for the night cuz on Sunday I am picking up his crate. Anyway... less than 2 minutes in the bathroom and hes just a'howlin' away!! My heart was breaking and my kids were going to get awakened! Out he came. So I set his blankets up next to my bed and put a baby gate on my bedroom door, he settled in and the lights when out. Five mintes later hes clawing at me from below. To make and already long story short, I ended up bringing him in the bed with me where he stayed ALL NIGHT!!!! Snuggled right up close to my neck! I moved and he moved.... it was so sweet! And beside a little bit of snoring and the 2 episodes of puppy dreams, we had a very good night!!!! We got to sleep in until almost 6 am before my cat woke us up! LOL! So after this long winded story I ask you... did I do the wrong thing by bringing the baby to bed with me?? Am I doomed to have a 60lb dog sleeping in the crook of my neck every night now? To be honest, I dont really mind but Im sure my husband will have something to say about it! LOL!

Yes I'm afraid you are!

Yes, I'm afraid you are doomed to aways have your baby in your bed ( and you'll be lucky if they stop at 60 lb) I always said I wouldn't have a dog in my bed, but that was before- I hadn't realized our boxer isn't really a DOG, it's a little boy with a fur coat that loves to snuggle. Now that he's 3 and over a hundred lb., he hogs all the room, but he still loves to snuggle, and we wouldn't have it any other way. (Only a boxer owner understands- everyone else thinks it's a little strange)
Congratulations on the new addition, I'm sure they will bring you years of joy. Now that's a gift that keeps on giving.....

Our babies all sleep with us, I strip my bed twice a week instead of once......just for good measure! Their just little cuddle babies, to be honest we have a king size bed , but, with the hubbie and two boxer girls, ( soon to have a little boxer boy) theres no room, we wouldnt change it for the world!!!!

Conrats on your newest addition and welcome!

When we got Porter (about 3 weeks ago) I was sure I would NEVER sleep again. We were up all night every night. With Nestle, it was not as bad... the noises were freakier but she would settle after about a half an hour but Porter would bark for hrs. I was all over the "Behavior Forums/Dog Training) and there was a lot of good advice on what to try. We actually ended up putting in one of my hubby's t-shirts and leaving on WFAN (sports talk radio) all night. Crazy as it seems, it worked and we have been sleeping for a week
:).

We also took our son's baby monitor (video kind) and used the 2nd camera on the crate. If you plan on crate training, you really need to deal with the night time horrors (haha). Trust me, it will end and your baby will sleep soundly.

Be sure to check out the training forums... great info on there!!

LOL - we tried the crate, lasted all of 1 hour and I couldn't stand it. Boomer not only cried he made a noise like he was being tortured, so him & I ended up on the couch until DH caved and now he is in our bed. :) It wasn't bad when he was a little pup and I would wake up with him snuggled next to my face. Now he's 5 months and 30-40 lbs and lays on top of the covers so I have to try and move him and pull the covers over me. I would do it over again! Enjoy :)

When we got our first boxer DH said absolutely never, ever was there to be a dog in the bed. Now both Rocky and Lucy sleep in the bed. They take up more than there share of room and hog the covers. They fart and snore. But I am crazy in love with both of them and can't stand to sleep without them. Congrats to you on having your very own warm snuggle bug in your bed!!

What I finally did was buy King size blankets...that way DH & I had covers that went around our backsides :)

Yes you're doomed, but in a good way! When Maddy was younger after about an hour and a half howling and crying and whinging she would settle but we'd be up three/four times in the middle of the night to let her out because she'd wake up crying (we immdeiately thought bathroom took her straight out retunred her straight back) after about a week we were shattered and I think one of us fell asleep on the bed without putting Maddy away. That has to be the best nights sleep we got in ages!! Now we cant shift her but we love her for it! In the summer shell sleep on the floor or on a thin bed down there by the fan next to Taz but in winter shes always up there and always lying right next to bely under the duvet, I wouldnt have it anyother way. Taz is a different story after an initial moan he doesnt care as long as he can see us he'd rather sleep in there because it means he can lie on his back with legs flailed at funny angles!

First off, congrats on your new baby! Paisley has slept in my (or my mom's) bed from the first night on. I wanted a dog that would/could sleep on my bed with me, not one that would have to stay in a crate all night. I don't see much problem with letting them sleep with you, but you just have to be prepared for when they're bigger because, as mentioned in other replies, they will roll over on YOU and push YOU out of bed! I did, though, crate train Paisley, and usually only crate her when necessary(mostly when we leave the house). Matlock, on the other hand, was crate trained by my breeder and slept in his crate at night from a puppy(I'd say 12 weeks on) until we got him. He slept in his crate for the first two nights here, but has been sleeping on my bed ever since(Paisley doesn't like my bed b/c it's small twin). But he is not a puppy anymore as he will be 17 months on Feb. 20th. I wish you luck with your new boy!
