Always licking the female's mouths

I have a question as to why Rommel is relentless in trying to lick the mouths of mature female dogs? They can be of any breed.

Is it a trait of boxers or maybe he was weened off his mother too soon. Is this OK behavior and what, if anything, should I do about it?

Do nothing. It's a submissive behavior, she is admitting that the other dog is higher in hierarchy than he is. It's a good thing!

I call it kissing! Panzer's tongue is always in motion at the dog park. The other dog owners often don't know what to make of it. Some confuse it for dominant behavior because he can't resist being in their face.

Now I can inform them what I've always known - he's just being a lovebug! :)

Maybe I'm brain dead today, it's Monday, but I'm confused.

You mentioned it being a submissive behavior...does that mean that Rommel is admitting to the mature female that he recognizes her as the hierarchy. And if that's the case, why don't the females let him do it? Everytime, they fight him (growl, show teeth, and defend).

I think it is a submissive gesture as well. The other girlies might not be sure of just what he is doing. You asked why he does it over and over, well you just answered that question. The girls are not letting him know they understand.

Penny does this to my two older ones all the time. They just accept the extra dental care with grace :)

Generally licking is considered a submissive behavior, since it's what babies do to adult wolves to trigger them to regurgitate food for them.

That's all well and good, but a dog that licks and won't stop is doing it as a sign of domination. Usually you see that more with people, especially kids, where somebody's held down and licked while they giggle and wriggle. If the dog won't stop until it's physically removed from the behavior, it's not a submissive gesture.

Sounds to me like the ladies aren't buying it :) I wouldn't do anything about it but rather let them take care of it. If they curl a lip and he backs off, he's fine. If he comes back for more abuse, you may have to start intervening when it looks like he's headed for a kissing session!

Otis is always kissing the ladies!! He's never had one growl or snap at him though, usually they are kissing him back! :LOL:

sierra and sinbad lick each other all the time like they are kissing each other.1 time at the vets sierra was getting her nails cut and didnt like it, sinbad just started licking her face as if to say its alright..it was sooo cute.
