Shotze's Mom
Super Boxer
What a week Shotze and I have had. Things went from worse, to life threatening. I previously posted on the vets opinion that she had allergies, he was right and wrong.
Friday night, Shotze was mutilating herself again by scratching and had her face nothing but blood. I put socks on her back feet to minimize the trauma. I thought nothing about it. I figured, this will help...Im doing a good thing. Saturday morning I woke up to a furbaby with a head the size of a honeydew melon. You could not see her eyes. Her face was hanging, her neck was swelled...she looked ike a monster. I lost it. I called my Mom and all I could get out was "Get down here". She knew it had something to do with Shotze. My Dad came with her and said there was something wrong and we had to get her to the EV. He privatley told my Mom that he didnt think she would make it. I was having an anxiety attack and couldnt breathe so I had to take a nerve pill. We got her to the EV and my doc was the "on-call" doc that morning. My Mom was not happy with that. She said it is his fault she is like this. I took her back and when he walked in he freaked. He asked what had I fed her. I said, " Solid Gold, what you told me to feed her." He said that she was having an allergic reaction to something and we had to get the swelling down. Over the next hour she got four shots of epinephrine.( I think it was an hour, remember the nerve pill) I asked him if it might be demodex and he said...(get this) " Did I do a scrape?" I said no you didnt. So he did one and THATS what she has. This could have ALL been avoided if he had just done his job two weeks ago when he said it was sarcoptic. Anyway, Shotzes face had swollen so much that it had busted open on the side of her face. He said put triple anti-biotic ointment on it and come back Monday morning for a dose of ivermectin.
$54 EV visit no EV charge cause he had saw her Tuesday
Saturday night
I put an e-collar on her. What a trip. She wouldnt move, eat, go potty, nothing. Just stood there looking like the dog from outter space that had radiation poisoning. No sleep for Me. I covered the couch in material and sat with her until she finally went to sleep at around 2am.
Sunday
I took the e-collar off and she was a much happier puppy. She ate, pottied and went to sleep. Her face was gooey and nasty so I doctored her all day. VERY anxious to get her to the vet. (griping the whole time about how this could have been avoided if the vet would have done a scraping)
Monday morning
Finally got to let my skinkid go back to school. Loaded Shotze up in the car (covered the seats with fabric) toook my skinkid to school, stopped by the doc office and got release for skinkid, faxed to school. 90mph to the vets. Get there, no vet. Have to wait half an hour on him. He gets there and we go back to the back. He gives her a dose of ivermectin and says to come back at two to pick her up. I say, " IM staying to make sure she doesnt have a reaction to the meds." I take her back out front and sit watching her for 15 minutes. When I see shes gonna be fine I take my prescription to the feed store. Doc does NOT tell me not to tell them its for a dog. I ask for ivermectin 1%. The lady asks if its for a cow or what. I say its for a puppy. She gives it to me. (after returning to the vet Im informed that they usually wont sell it if its to be used on a dog....I say, " YOU didnt TELL me to LIE!") Anyways, $36 on meds and Im on my way to wait for her. I spend a few hours at my Moms work and then call to check on her. Shes fine, not eatting but fine. So at 2 I go get her. You have never seen a happier pup. She was ready to leave the vets! She didnt go p-p in the crate at the vets so she was about to pop. I let her do her business and we go home. Oh yeah, GUESS how much the vet visit was? NOTHING! NADA! ZILTCH! He KNEW he made a mistake and didnt charge me. Shotze spent the rest of Monday asleep.
This morning
I have been making Shotze stay in her crate because of the blood and goo thats all over her. I let her out to potty and then brought her in on her lead and tied her lead to the plant ledge in the house. I put her new bed down with some more fabric in it to catch all the gore. She has had her amoxicillin and at 3 Ill be giving her another dose of ivermectin. She is asleep once again. I have found out what she is allergic to. Gain laundry detergent. Friday night I put socks on her feet that had been washed in Gain, resulted in head swelling. I have switched detergent and have had no reaction thus far.
I had been told by a few members of BW that she might have demodex mange, and I didnt listen. I trusted my vet. I was wrong and I am sorry. I should have listened. I could have spared Shotze all this pain if I had asked my vet to do the scrape. I cant remember but I think it was Lael's Mom that suggested this last. I should have listened!!!!! I should have taken your advice. I appologize for defending my vet, and I appologize for not listening.
I have taken some pics of Shotze in the various stages of this rash and I will be posting them ONLY because I would like for them to be used as a reference to anyone who might have a dog and wants to know what Demodex mange looks like. Please understand that she looks BAD. She is NOT neglected in ANY way and is getting the proper care. Once she starts getting better Ill take more pics to show her progress. She still isnt back to her old self and wont play or bark or anything right now. I miss my baby. Ill be SO glad when she is back to her old self.
Thanks for all the PM's. I thought this was the best way to answer them. This board is full of caring people..so refreshing in this world to be able to converse with and possibly meet those kind of people. Ill start posting pics this morning and they should be up by this evening or tomorrow.
Thanks again and please keep Shotze in your prayers.
