Allie eat chocolate!

I was in the other room, when I heard a crash in the kitchen. Allie had pulled down the cookie sheet that had chocolate-chip cookies on it! I am not sure how many she eat, but I think it was a significant amount. I know chocolate can be poisonous to dogs... what should I do? Should I call the vet?? Anyone have any experience with this???? :( (By the way, she is about 40 lbs.)

You can check with your vet if you want, more than likely they will tell you to keep an eye on her and watch for anything abnormal, such as vomiting, lethargy, etc. I had the same freak out with Coco one time only rather than stealing them off the cookie sheet, she was stealing them out of my daughter's hands. All double chocolate cookies. My vet said that they have to eat 1 oz per pound of body weight before it can become toxic and a problem. I doubt that there is enough choco chips in the cookies she ate to really cause a threat but keep your eye on her and make sure. I'm far from an expert on this, this is simply what my experience consisted of and what my vet told me. I hope maybe this will be of some help to you. More than likely she just got a lot of extra treats this afternoon and will probably always love cookies now

If this makes you feel any better, my friend's 14 lb Rat Terrier mix ate several Hershey's kisses. That's a lot for a little guy. She was so upset, but her vet neighbor said he should be fine. He was.

I agree with Coco's Mommy. Just watch her. If you'd feel better, call your vet.

I hope she's OK.

Thanks for your replies. I know I overreacted, (and I have more than once, as you might notice from other posts), but I cant imagine if anything happened to my baby. So far, she seems to be okay, but I do intend to keep an closer eye on her tonight!

Twice this has happened to Cody. One time he ate a package of dark chocolate. My mom and sister were making hot fudge for Chirstmas and he got it off the counter when they left. I was out of town but they told me later. I was not happy because we knew he got up on the counters...Oh well, he was fine.

The second time, I bought my bf Jon a solid chocolate I(heart)U for V-day. It was probably 3" x 8" atleast. I had shut the office door when I left and he opened it and ate everything but the foil and cardboard. The vet said he probably ate it when you left...so just watch him to make sure he doesn't get sick. He said it would do more harm now to make him throw it up.

Luckily, he was fine those two times. I am so thankful.

I would have reacted the same way you did though. Just keep an eye on her.

Our Mya got into the Halloween candy one year and went to town. The little sneak, she managed to carefully unwrap each candy bar, lick clean, and then hide under the couch. Couldn't keep bananas in the fruit bowl either. I'd always come home to find the empty peels intact except for a tiny slit - Cathy

I would freak out if it was Toffee too, since I worry about her so much!

BUT, when I was growing up, we had an airedale--very appropriately named Mischief--and she ate a lot of chocolate during her 14-year life span including a 2 pound box of chocolate, a pan of brownies, and a Bill Knapp's chocolate cake. That dog could get food off the fridge! She was always okay, though. Upset tummy for a day was all.

I know chocolate is not good but I swear I heard on Animal Planet emergency vet that the chocolate that is really toxic is the baking chocolate?? Dont know for sure so dont quote me.

I was actually at a seminar on Saturday for the "Top 10 Poisonings in Dogs" presented by the vet from Alameda East on Animal Planet. He said in 22 years he had one dog die from chocolate. It was a small dog and it ate LOTS of baking chocolate. He said the theobromide (sp?) in baking chocolate is way more dense in baking chocolate. Milke chocolate is cooked so it loses a lot of theobromide and then they add milk which dilutes it even more.
