My poor daddy...

is allergic to just about anything with fur. When we lived in So. Cal. we had three cats, four dogs, and horses. He did fine with the pigs :p . It was also very windy and dusty in Lancaster so that aggrevated a lot of his problems. He used to go in and get weekly shots so this may be worthwhile to look into. What a father won't do for his daughter... .

I agree, a boxer's hair is different than a poodle. Poodles don't shed. My cousin, who is realy allergic and I think has asthma, has a poodle and schnauzer because they don't bother her. I have allergies, mostly seasonal. What I do is I don't let our boxer in the bed, this helps a whole lot. I would have your fiance try some of the allergy meds everyone has mentioned, something is bound to work. I am allergic to cats but not as bad with dogs, the dog has to have a lot of long hair for me to be that sick. I just take otc allergy meds and that usually helps me. I hope your fiance finds something that works for him. No, allergies really don't go away. I was told that you outgrow them, I think that is a myth, I have had allergies over 20 years. Good luck.

I might as well jump in too... I had the same exact problem. Certain animals aggravated my allergies and others did not. A friend gave me a couple of Allegras and I took those and they solved my problem. I take one every morning and can love on Harley all I want and she doesn't make me sick.

I totally empathize with you. I love animals, but just can't always love them like I want to. I still don't go around cats unless I have to, but at least I can have our Harley!

Good luck! What works for one, may not work for the other. Go to your allergist, and try things until you find something that works.

I also take Zyrtec. I am allergic to cats and dogs, some more than others. I found that I built up a tolerance to the cats and I'm gradually building up a tolerance to Daisy. I still get awful hives as big as dimes after we wrestle but they go away after I wash up. I can't touch my face or eyes after petting her--I'm always washing my hands! ;) I even have an inhaler when I get a touch of asthma (which is rare but usually happens from a combo of dog, cat, and mold spores!).
So it can work if you put your mind to it and he works with a doctor!

Good luck!

I washed my blinds two years ago, and haven't gotten over it yet!! Isn't there something else to cover windows that doesn't require so much hard work??

That's how I felt the first time I did it! LOL We looked into all window coverings, but blinds were the only real option for us. He has outgrown most of his allergies thank God, but I still do all the cleaning. It is worth the work. Imagine an infant who couldn't eat, cried 23 hrs a day, was kept like a greased piglet with eczema ointment... now he likes having a day to get spoiled rotten by gramma or daddy (out of the house) while I clean like crazy. (also dusting on top of all doors and moldings) *ugh* I know my situation was extreme, but he built up a tolerance slowly to most things in small doses, so I do clean less in the rest of the house now. He still has his bedroom that is a "safe" room, (we call it his bubble) free of most allergens. If he gets overwhelmed he plays in there for a while. Spring is here and it's time for the old allergies to resurface (and my cleaning frenzy) until he gets acclimated again. And yes, ya do what you have to.

Anyone wanna come wash some blinds with (read: FOR) me??

:p I'll babysit the furbabies. LOL

Like I said before: you are a saint!!! It must be very rewarding to see him build up tolerance to things and be able to enjoy doing things without being miserable!!angelicon

Try giving your puppy a hot oil treatment

My former sister-inlaw was allergic to cats and dogs but never had a problem at my house. I would bath Rock and Morrison every 2 weeks and give them a cardinals hot oil treatment. It really seems to keep the dander down. Good luck - I'm sure with all the members on the board there will be lots of options.

My girlfriend has alergies and she goes in to the doctor every month or two I think and gets a shot that lasts?? Re the blinds for those of you who want an easier way to clean them. I have horizontal blinds in every windowsmashicon I take them down and outside I have two nails on the fence where I hook them on to and then I hose them wet wash them with a car brush closed and turn them the other way and wash them again and rinse, let dry and put them back up, it really works!!
