Boxer Pal
My 8 week old Boxer is flying in in about one week and I am wondering how to treat her on first arrival and whether anyone has had any experience with the dog being very scared a traumatized. Any suggestions?

Diva came in on an airplane also. When we went to pick her up, she had this complete look of fear. My fiancee got out of the truck and tried to take her out of her traveling kennel, and she wanted no part of him. She was shaking like crazy. When he finally lured her out, he handed her to me and I wrapped her up in my coat and held her in my lap the whole way home. When we got her home, she just kind of walked around the house a few times sniffing things out. She was definitely not in any kind of mood to play with us at all. The first night was rough - she did not sleep at all. She just whined and cried all night. But every day got a little bit better. She got more energy everyday - and slept a little bit better every night. After about the third day she was over it and now it is like she does not even remember what had happened.
The first couple of days are going to be tough, but be patient, it is well worth it!!!
Good Luck!!

We got Nina from Thunder Bay...so the flight was less than 2 hours...but with all the preperations at the airport...it was more like 6 hours in the crate.
She was a bit older..12 weeks...she did fine though
I do remember when i openned the crate she was shaking....i let her out for a fast pee and back in the crate with a warm blankey....I do remember she had a runny poo that night...i guess it could be from the stress of the flight....the next day she was fine and happy to be with us.

Chloe flew on a 2 hour flight at 9 weeks of age. When we got to the crate and opened it - she didn't want to come out; needless to say we pulled her out and it was all kisses from then on. We didn't let her go on the grass - not to subject her to any germs or viruses (from other dogs who travel through there too); we just packed her in the car and sped home. We also made a one time exception and did not put her back in her crate for the trip home. I cuddled her in a blankie (in case she had to pee) all the way home. We did want to add to her stress.

As soon as we go home (10 min. drive) - we took her the back yard :)... then in the house and showed her the bed, and water... Sha had no problems adjusting; she didn't cry -- and she ate even on her first night.

Generally speaking, the less emotional you make it, the better. As exciting as it is for you to meet the new member of your family, the pup will be somewhat shaken and will recover fastest if you're warm but matter of fact. Certainly bundle her up and hold her in your lap for the ride home, but avoid passing her around from person to person. Speak lovingly but not comfortingly to her -- you don't want to encourage the nervousness. If you need to chatter, just speak enthusiastically about the wonderful new home she's going to and all the fun she's going to have (a soothing "and when we get home you'll see your nice yard and the beautiful crate with the big soft fluffy bed inside, and you can sleep as much as you want!" as opposed to "oh, you poor baby, what happened to you? Don't be scared, Mama's here" etc. etc.) Even if you don't mean to, with the latter conversation you'll be sending a signal with your tone that will reinforce the dog's uneasy mental state.

And remember -- puppies that age sleep a lot. For about every hour up they'll sleep an hour or more. She may not have slept on the plane so that will make it doubly difficult to settle and focus until she's caught up. Just let her explore a small part of your home that first night -- maybe the kitchen/livingroom and the bedroom where she'll sleep. It's a big world and she has plenty of time to explore it and meet everybody who will be in her life. Try to keep the # of people she meets the first 24 hours at a minimum so that she can sleep and wrap her brain around her new universe.

Chances are, after a couple of naps she will act like she owns the place :)

Palmer flew from Anchorage to Portland, OR. He didn't seem to be bothered at all by the trip when we got him. His breeder has his favorite things in his crate, along with a baby blanket folded up several times for his bed. He was comfy-cozy in there. Bounded out of his crate in typical Boxer style. He was 9 weeks when he was shipped to me. I think if the pup has been properly crate trained before leaving the breeders it should make the trip much easier.

My poor baby Mina came home to me on a airplane, The first time i had ever purchased a puppy were they had to go on a airplane to come home, It was not a great experience for her or for me for that matter. She was 11 wks old and lethargic. I thought I had purchased a sickly baby. We brought her to the vet the next day and she had conjunctivitis and had to be given eye medicine three x a day plus she was so absolutly afraid of the sounds the car made. But after rewards and going to the park everytimes she goes in the car she is 100% enthused now and couldn't ask for a better baby then her. When you do get your baby hold him/her and whisper in his/her ear of how great its going to be there with you and let him/her rest. Call me crazy but thats what i did.
