advice on doggy smell?

do you find that boxers scratch up wood floors at all? just wondering... also what is your preference on either clipping or filing their claws... thanks for the input...

scratching wooden floors

We sanded our floorboards and varnished them in the hall and they looked great until Kramer and Holly decided to run at the front door to meet someone coming home. I have since put laminate flooring down and this does not scratch.

Hi Seattle-ite! [former one here] I use "smell good" sprays.. you can get them at petsmart/petco... and Ping also gets doggy lotion but the sprays are better for the odors. And febreeze is my best friend!

Thanks for all the great replies. I liked both ideas for the dog and the house. I have some shoppind to do I had already considered replacing our carpeting the living room with tile, and have one more pro on the tiling side now. Thanks again!

Smell on the dog:
Home Depot has this great powder stuff. It is a kit.(developed by Milekin sp? th carpet manufacturer). You actually mist the carpet, then sprinkle with powder. Let the powder sit, then scrub the powder into the fibers and vacume out. Even got PERMENANT marker out of my berber. The other thing about this stuff is, most carpet manufacturers will not warentee your carpet once you get it wet, including to clean it. The home systems just tend to spread the mess around, and are not powerful enough to pull all the liquid back out, so it ends up in your carpet, just diluted and scented. Let me know if you need the exact name and I will go get the stuff out of the basement.

Is this powder a chemical? I have noticed my berber carpet on the first floor of my townhouse has doggie smell and my steam vac won't clean berber well.

How do you clean your berber in general? I was going to try to find someone who uses natural methods to clean carpet. I'm not crazy about having a regular carpet cleaner come in since Tae spends so much time on the carpet.

We put laminate flooring throughout our house and we love it. Besides there not being any smells, it durable, easy to clean and looks just like real wood.

This sounds wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!! If you could come up with the name of it, I'd be forever in your debt :D . Sammi has all but ruined my cream-colored bedroom carpeting in this house, but we're moving into a newly built home in December, and I ordered (duh!) a cream colored berber. It would be great to be armed with a solution before it gets stained.

There are many new versions of Febreze that may not bother you too much.
I also use Oust on a regular basis. It just gets rid of the smells without leaving a perfumy smell in the house. I was recently showing my house to sell it, and nobody knew I had 2 dogs (Max, now waiting at the bridge & Sammi Doodles).

If replacement is an option, I'd definitely take your carpet up. Steam cleaning just makes it smell mustier. We did the cheapie laminate from Sam's Club and it was WONDERFUL!!! It did wonders for the doggie smell and was a breeze to clean.

The dogs nails didn't scratch it up at all....and with lots of fosters in the house, there are lots of burns going on!

I also used the glade plug-ins in all rooms that we didn't remove the carpet.

Also CANDLES are a big plus. The best brand I've used is Gold Canyon Candles.

Orange and any of the spice fragrances really cut through the doggie odor...plus it's great to just light up when you've got someone dropping by and you don't have time to vaccuum the rugs or spray all of the rooms.

I use wipes on my babies in between baths. Candles and glade plugin too.
Also, I took up my carpet because I knew I had wood floors underneath. I restained them and put many coats of polyurethane down so I don't get any scratches from dogs or furniture. Love the wood floors, but I think the dogs would prefer carpet for the traction. You usually hear the dogs before you see them, legs and feet just flying.
