advice on doggy smell?

Okay, well with fall now here in Seattle we have more rain and a slightly smellier dog. Plus, the windows aren't open as much either. Now I know that some of this is just that my husband and I have sensitive noses, but I don't like walking into my house and smelling dog. Porter is an indoor dog of course and I try to wash his bedding once a week. His paws are wiped off when he comes in wet and/or muddy. I haven't been bathing him regularly based on all threads I read on here about it drying out their skin. And, in truth, he's not dirty...just doggy What are some of the routines all of you use to combat the dog smell? Is there a product you can spray on them that is totally harmless but removes some of the doggy smell? I own a bissell steam vac and I'm gathering I'm going to need to clean my carpet weekly. Because I am so sensitive to smells, I can't use Febreeze...its all I can smell and it gives me a headache after awhile. Porter doesn't get up on the furniture, so most of the smell must be coming from the carpeting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

During the winter months I use the premoistened wipes on Oscar. They have a nice smell to them and don't dry out his skin. His coat is extra soft too.
I get them at Petco. If you go to their website they're under Grooming--Waterless Bathing. They have a couple of different kinds.

I've also used the foam bath that you just rub in the foam and brush afterwards. It works great as well.

dog smells

Im not sure if your local human society will have this stuff but here in Phoenix Arizona they have this stuff called odor out it comes in a white plastic can with a black lid it looks like small grains of cat litter has no smell at all you just sprinkle it on the affected area and with in a day the smell is gone and you just vacuum it up really great stuff works on all kind of smells from animal to the greasy garage

Frankie has doggie cologne. It cost I cant really remember how much it was, but I know it was under ten dollars. It smells like Ralph Lauren. I use this in between bath time, I brush his coat, and then spray him down with this GOOD smelling stuff. He smells so handsome afterwards. All the girl dogs wink at him LOL

Smell on the dog:
1. We use doggie mist perfume, sold at Target and other places (we like baby powder sent best).
2. Do not wash the dog, but let them get in the tub to rinse off with just a little shampoo in the water, if they are not too diffucult to bathe, keeps the stink down and does not dry ou the skin, just make sure to rinse well with clear water too.
Smell in house:
1. De-humidifier get on large enough for the entire house! Very important in humid climates or for moist basements.
2. Home Depot has this great powder stuff. It is a kit.(developed by Milekin sp? th carpet manufacturer). You actually mist the carpet, then sprinkle with powder. Let the powder sit, then scrub the powder into the fibers and vacume out. Even got PERMENANT marker out of my berber. The other thing about this stuff is, most carpet manufacturers will not warentee your carpet once you get it wet, including to clean it. The home systems just tend to spread the mess around, and are not powerful enough to pull all the liquid back out, so it ends up in your carpet, just diluted and scented. Let me know if you need the exact name and I will go get the stuff out of the basement.
3. Plug-ins help too.
4. Fabreeze. They now have many different sents out there including no-sent. It is really les offensive than the orginal Fabreeze.
5. For furniture, try getting some sent from a local car dealership that sells used cars. They usually have a variety of smells.

I use a product called Buddy Spritz. It is a lavender and mint scented spritz and coat conditioner for in between baths.It works really great to get rid of that doggy smell. You can get it at cloudstar.com they also make a shampoo with the same scent and it doesn't dry Lily's skin at all and I bathe her about every 2 weeks. She can get really smelly in between baths but a couple of sprays of the Buddy Splash takes that doggy smell right out and it makes her coat soft too.

I really enjoyed reading all your helpful comments. I live in Oregon; therefore, the rainy season is really troublesome. The mud, smell, and dampness...it is an awful combination. Thanks everyone for sharing your great ideas. I love BW!

Go for leather not fabric sofas and cushions. Replace carpet for a wooden or tiled floor. Expensive but in my one room where I have done this there is zero smell. In the carpeted room it smells doggy especially in the morning. A bit like sweaty socks! A lot of you would never dothis one but here goes...dont put blankets etc in the dog bed.

Use neutrodol carpet freshner and Ambi pur plug ins are the best.
