Advice Needed: Backyard Waste Management

"Knockdown" doggie dooley

We have the "knockdown" doggie dooley from that website, which is plastic rather than steel. The digestive powder does do it's job, as the poop does dissolve quickly but we have climate issues with it. Right now we cannot use it at all because of the winter temperatures (the directions warn it will not work properly under 40 degrees) and it was difficult at times during the summer to keep it wet. During that time, we just used alot more of the activator than we originally thought we would.

Overall we consider it a great investment. When we were able to use it, it keeps the yard from stinking. Just be sure to read carefully and consider the climate you live in, and carefully choose the location in your yard. If New Jersey is anything like the midwest, you will love it in the spring, summer and fall, but might not get the benefits during the winter months.

Like Laila63139, we also have the doggie dooley-xtra large version. We have the climate issues as well. We also used more digester than we thought we would, but I started putting egg shells in ours and it seemed to help the chemicals speed up the process. Iin the spring,summer and fall months,it's great to have-no smell or mess in my backyard and it's out of the line of sight.With 4 boxers,we have quite a bit of clean up but I'm so glad that I got one. I ordered mine online from Petsmart and got free shipping and the stores didn't carry in stock the larger one that we needed.

Definitely a worthwhile investment !

Don't think I'm being difficult, but if you have to pick the stuff up anyway and put it in the doo-doo disposer, how different is that than putting it in a paper bag and throwing it in the garbage can where it will go to a land fill and degrade normally anyhow?

Unless you could train the dogs to open the lid, squat and go in there, I don't see much time savings. Not being difficult, I swear....just curious.

I was just thinking about that same thing. I hate picking it up regardless. This does look like a good idea though......at least this way it doesn't have to sit in the trash can until trash day. Hmmmm.....I might invest in one after winter. I had never heard of anything like this until now. :) Thanks!!

Actually where we have ours "planted" is in the middle of an ivy patch,which sits at the top of our backyard. As the contents "decompose"-sorry -I couldn't think of a better word :)- it all leaches back into the ground. The lower part of my yard is the most beautiful lush green I've ever seen and the flower beds that surround it have awesome flowers now. We used to do the pick up and put in poop bags too, but I had the hair brained idea that it would help the yard. It did, but now the blasted ivy is taking over everything !!!

We had one and it didn't work--we are on a sand base and the water would drain too fast. It filled up with poop really quick. So it's good to make sure that your soil will accomodate prior to spending the money. I use a 5 gallon paint bucket with a lid and trashbag and just empty into the trash once a week.

The difference for me is, in the area we live in it must sit for a week in a roll-out dumpster that stays right next to the house until trash day, when it gets rolled out into the street. If we let it sit in there for an entire week, it gets STINKY fast.

I guess it doesn't really save me time, but it stinks less than if I leave it sit in the yard or in the dumpster. For the most part, it's personal preference!

LOL.. I wish I could train Laila to use it like a toilet. What a great idea!

I like Super Boo's idea of the 5 gal bucket, that would work well for me. I would be scared to take the lid off though...phew!!:D

Yeah....

I do the bucket thing now, but when it gets time to throw it away...OH MY!!!

I would think the septic system wouldn't be as painful of a process, granted it works as advertised.
