Just saw your website. Are you the only boxer rescue in WI. I notice it says statewide. Do you adopt to IL?

We cover the state of WI and the U.P. of Michigan. We generally refer IL residents to Boxer Rebound.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. First of all, dlcenters, I am very sorry that your application was denied. Maybe with a slight compromise, such as industrial fans or something similiar would make a difference, hopefully something can be worked out.

As far as the problems facing rescue groups, let me tell you some of the expenses and problems I have had as a foster mom (not even as a director, you poor souls!). The weekend of my birthday, I left my sister who was in the hospital just having had a baby and my family that wanted to be with me, to drive 3 1/2 hours ONE WAY to meet a family that desperately wanted to adopt Bosco. They were a lovely family and I mean no disrespect to them, but they took one look at Bosco and said, Oh, My, he's just too big. It says right on the website "a BIG boy..." and in speaking with them, I told them he weighed close to 90 pounds. They gave him little opportunity to show his personality. He was hesitant to go to them, but hey, he had just driven 3 1/2 hours in a Camaro and of course my a/c in my car stopped half way there! Of course he was slightly grumpy, heck, I was grumpy! I have also had potential adopters demand that I mail them videos of fosters because they didn't like "barkers", a different family wanted me to drive all the way to their house (about 4 hours away) and leave a guy overnight to see if it worked. They even said I should be able to find a hotel for around $60.00 a night so I wouldn't have to drive back home (how considerate! no mention of halving it with me). Rescuing is a passion that I have and I love my little lost boys, but sometimes I don't think that all applicants realize the dedication (both financially, emotionally, and time) that foster parents give. I would do anything to get my boys in good homes, but at times, I am at a loss.

Again, I am sorry because I really have a "gut" feeling that your a/c situation is a case of one bad apple spoiling the bunch. Don't give up, there is a special boy or girl that is waiting to find your loving home.

Wow, that all sounds SO familiar! In rescue we meet so many wonderful people but then there are a few that just have unrealistic expectations. I've also had people come to meet a foster dog and say, "Oh, he's so big!" (even though the web site clearly says that the dog is LARGE). Or sometimes it's just the little things . . . it really bugs me, for example, when people are really anti-licking (not that I let my Boxer go to town on my face all the time, but the breed LOVES to kiss and I think you have to appreciate them for that!). Applicants will go on and on asking how they can train the dog never to kiss them? Funny little things like that.

ok...here's another problem I don't get...

...another problem I've encountered that is hard for me to understand...

Rescues are so overwhelmed with going through apps., short on help, need foster homes, etc...yet there are only 7 dogs listed as available for adoption in the whole state through this particular rescue...

I have stated interest in 2 different dogs since applying 3 weeks ago-one has already been adopted, and the other one is listed as "adoption pending" (not with me-unless I haven't been informed yet LOL) as of yesterday...seems to me there are more applications for adoption than there are dogs to be adopted...it is very frustrating...you see a baby that you fall in love with sight unseen but for a picture and description, and in the meantime someone else gets them before you ever had a chance to even meet them...due to the "snail's pace" paper trail...it is heartbreaking.

I have NEVER had a rescue offer to bring the dog to me...seems to me that if you want it bad enough, you need to go to it and absorb the expense (which I'm more than willing to do if given the chance). In the past 3 weeks since applying, I have only been contacted once (email) with a question about vet records on my current dog due to misinformation from the vet, which I explained completely (return email). My personal references have not even been contacted yet-I am hanging in limbo not knowing what's going on while the dog that stole my heart in the first place and prompted me to apply is going somewhere else...(ps-this is a different rescue-not the one that flat out denied us).

I just didn't realize going into this whole thing that it would be so difficult to give a supposedly "needy" dog a loving home...

Again, there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes that you may not know about. I am not saying that rescues are perfect, but it amazes me when people come to BoxerWorld and use up so much time and energy complaining about organizations that are staffed by VOLUNTEERS. That is not to say that rescues don't make mistakes but if someone is THAT dissatisfied with rescue . . . go somewhere else. If someone is that unhappy wiht rescue, it's unlikely that a good relationship is going to develop anyway. And a good relationship between the adopter and the rescue is very important.

Many rescues do not even have time to list all their dogs on their web site. If a new dog comes in, many times preference is given to former adopters or to applicants who have been waiting a long time for the right match. Speaking just for our rescue, every time a young dog hits our site, we are DELUGED with people who want that ONE dog. The seniors get no action but the youngsters get plenty. We actually process our adoptions quite quickly but sometimes you will see "adoption pending" on the site for several weeks because we wait until the dog is in the new home for a while (to make sure everything is working out okay) before moving the dog's picture to the "adopted" page. So the perception may be that rescues are slow with paperwork but really there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

sorry for wasting your time...i am just trying to understand the whole process better...i thought that's what this website was all about-getting help and answers to questions/problems and voicing opinions on certain subjects. I'll not bother you again with my trivial problems...

I don't think anyone is trying to trivialize your problems - they're just trying to answer and respond to your queries.

We all feel for you and are ALL hoping that you get that perfect rescue match!!!

I'm sorry...I wasn't referring to everyone... I meant to quote this previous reply.

I really appreciate all the useful and helpful info I have received for the most part.

I am turned down by a rescue group for not doing enough for my dog. I understand that they are committed to their fosters, as they should be. But to turn me down without as much as a phone conversation, or a visit is so cold.

Sorry for your experiences with your babies and with trying to rescue...it is frustrating as well as heartbreaking...as everyone has told me...just keep trying-something will eventually come up...

I just don't think that everyone HAS to feel compelled to get a dog from rescue. If it's not working out, it's not working out. And if someone has an issue with a specific rescue, in my mind it would be better to contact that rescue directly to voice concerns vs. blasting rescue in general.

Many times shelters have breed watch lists where they will call you when a specific breed comes in. That's another possible way to find a new companion. Also check Petfinder.
