(a vent) Breeding and vets!

I just had to vent a little about vets and breeding. I know that responsible health testing breeders rule (so to speak) but I get soooooo disgusted with vets when they recommend a puppy seller or offer the puppy seller whatever just because they know this person is going to bring in some business. Rather it be good business (a pooch that lives many years health issue free) or good business (a pooch that has many problems that they can earn some dollars on).

I have found that my vet knows little about actuall breeding. They know little about which dog is a good prospect for another. They know little about being carriers. They know little about quiet a few things when it comes to breeding period. Sure they can offer info about OFA health testing procedures but how many actually push the issue???

I`m sure I could add other things but I just wanted to see how others have taken the situation?

i encountered one veterinarian that was bursting with excitement wanting to know if i was going to breed my dogs. This really kind of took me by suprise because well....you know...my dogs are only 1 yr old and 9 months old, not to mention they havent been tested and arent a "perfect" standard.

In my experience, many vets know very little about dog conformation in general. I am from a small town, where small animals vets had the same livestock mentality as large animal vets. To them, pets were simply to be fed, watered and shot up with vaccinations once a year. If they got together and had puppies or kittens, so be it. Print up some fliers and give them away...

I know of course that many 'modern' vets don't think this way. This is just my experience.

I can't count the amount of people that have emailed me for breeding advice and will add "My vet said my dog is the perfect dog to breed". EEK!!

My personal vet goes the other route. She does not support breeding at all. She has referred a couple of Boxer owners to me in the past to talk out of breeding their girls. She helps the shelters with vet care and recently even took in a 3-legged Corgi mom-to-be. They whelped the litter, placed the pups and momma went home with one of the techs. I watched momma run all over the clinic for a few months and she did not seem phazed that she only had 3 legs.

My vet immediately starts talking spaying and neutering from the very first puppy or kitten visit. I have a wonderful vet and I feel that she thinks like most people here on this board. I am glad to have found a vet that puts the animal before the money.

The first vet visit I had with Cashew (one week after we got her) was awesome. One of the first questions, after telling us she seemed to be in perfect health,(further testing assured that) was, Are you going to spay her. She went on to tell us the usual "before first heat is best"etc. I'm glad to see that many vets put the spaying well before the" ÿou should breed her". In fact, on her next visit for her shots, we're going to set up the appointment for her spay.

That is very heartwarming to hear. Thank you so much for sharing. It has been getting depressing with all the "help---I have a litter coming" posts we have had here lately. To hear of an owner and a vet taking a more responsible approach is wonderful !!!!
