A Daddy's Confession (Long)

I am the luckiest man alive.

We finished a nap a while ago. There we were, me and all 3 boxers in my queen sized bed, they with their little heads all facing me, heads on my body and lined up one beside the other like cars in a parking lot.

Their warm breath was sweet and warmed not only my body but my heart and soul. I didn't want to sleep. I just wanted to enjoy this moment and wallow in the love I felt for my dogs.

Soon Maggie was snoring and Rider was making his whining noise he makes when he sleeps, along with the occasional grunt. :)

I couldn't help but ponder my situation in life and the fact that somehow I managed to own three of the most incredible dogs in the entire world.

I've been very, very ill since July. I've been in and out of the hospital countless times and even fell into a coma for 10 days at one point. Through it all my dogs have not waivered. They've taken what has come along in their stride and accepted things as they, unfortunately, had to be. I am still on a very long road to recovery but making progress.

And through all of this, I have been a pretty awfully Daddy at times. I've lost my patience with them many times, not given them much attention at all and spent most of my time in bed. Throughout it all their love and devotion to me has never waivered, not once. They each always have a snuggle, a kiss or a nubby wiggle for their Daddy, no matter how awful I've been.

I am truly sorry for the hard times I have put them through lately. I wish I could take it all back, not have gotten sick and never had to go through this with my dogs.

I have no family here (a sister who isn't worth 2 cents and never calls or comes to see if I'm dead or alive). I have relied on my neighbors to help care for my dogs while in the hospital. One neighbor was who found me in a coma on my kitchen floor one afternoon after she noticed that the dogs had been outside all morning and afternoon long. She knew something was wrong because she knew the dogs never stay out in the back for that length of time. She came and found me and literally saved my life, calling 911 and then taking care of my pups as though they were her own.

But one of my neighbors reminded me that I indeed DO have family. I have people around me who care and look after me and friends who love my dogs as much as I do. And she pointed out that I have three dogs who are my loving, giving family, who will always be there for me.

So even though times have been really tough of late, the one thing that is constant is the love of my dogs and their loyalty and caring and giving and forgiveness. I am forever in their debt. They too have saved my life.

Without them I would have no reson to live.

I just wanted to publicly tell them and my friends at Boxerworld that your babies are your family and you should cherish them as if they were the most precious gems in the universe, because they are.

I pray that I can life up to their standards some day and be the kind of person that they are dogs. My life, my love and my everlasting gratitude are theirs for as long as I may live.

God Bless You Maggie, Susie and Rider. I love you with all my heart.

Daddy

You are so right Dan, their love for us is amazing. I'm sure they understand you haven't been well, when my brother had cancer our Jazzy somehow knew he wasn't well and would sleep with him, follow him around and always be touching him, lending him her strength. Your babies love you and just want you well. I really hope you're feeling better and on the road to recovery.

What a moving and loving trubute to your three wonderful fur companions and your OK neighbors. I'm sure Maggie and Susie and Rider know when Daddy is not feeling well. Dogs seem to understand humans better than most other humans.

Hope you are feeling better and soon recover from your illness.

Family is just that; whoever you can rely on to build you up during rough times.... what a wonderful post, and I hope that you are well on your way to recovery.

Dan, I'm sorry to hear about what you are going through healthwise... No wonder you have been uncharacteristicly short in some post recently..now I totally understand.

I hope that you'll continue to pour your heart and soul into these dogs and in no time things will look up again and you'll feel better...
