No Nos

I made a mistake on on my first times visiting a dog park and brought some doggie treats. Bad Move!! I had half of the larger dogs chasing and jumping after me to steal my treats hidden in my pockets. lol

Can't remember if they had running water for drinking there so I guess we should bring some incase.

Tennis balls are a good item to bring. However Blade seemed to be more interested in checking out the other doggie players than fetching a toy.

What time to arrive. I would say the earlier the better. Remember there is also a dog beach in Quiet Waters Park. So you might want to bring towels to dry off your baby especially if it ends up being a very warm day and a walk on the beach will be in order.smashicon lovicon frogicon grin2icon gradicon rulesicon appicon foolicon

I can't wait! Cassius loves trips to the dog park but I'm sure he'll love it even more with 20 fellow boxers there :) There was one his same age at our park once and they wouldn't leave eachother alone :D.

We're there!

I am so excited that I didn't miss the day! My computer was broken for the past three weeks, I was freakin out! Niko will just be a little over five months, I can't wait to see him with other boxers. I am a little nervous that Niko may get a little too carried away! His pit friend Reggie and him play pretty rough, and he is non-stop when it comes to playing! Are your babies the same way? At least he'll be nice and tired out!;)

Dog Park Concern

Hi. I have just read the newest posts regarding incidents readers have had at dog parks with aggressive dogs. Now, I am concerned about coming to the Boxer Bash next month. Will there be other dogs there, besides us boxers? How will we know if they are friendly or aggressive, before something terrible happens? Is anyone else concerned about this?
Please give feedback. I really want to come to the bash, but not at the risk of my fur babies.

I've been offline for a while, glad I didn't miss the day! I should be able to come with Zack (who will be just over 1 year old by then.) We have been to Quiet Waters park a few times, though not since the fall. The first few times Zack went there, he was so scared he spent the entire time sitting under the bench where my mom and I were. The last time, we unhooked his leash and he never looked back! They do have water there, and several buckets. People seem pretty good about filling the buckets up with fresh water after their dog drinks some. There were usually some tennis balls or other toys there with no owner, so having something to play with was never a problem. We've never been to the beach.

I've never had a problem with aggressive dogs there. I think one time there was a dog that caused a few very minor problems and he was removed. Some people over react to rough play (that isn't aggressive at all) and get a little defensive. But really, I haven't seen aggressive dogs at all. They do play and chase each other but it's pretty obvious if all involved dogs aren't having fun. The only place where I can see some problems happening is right at the gate where the dogs come in. The dogs already in the park tend to gather at the gate when a new one comes in, and having a bunch of hyper dogs running up could be scarey for the new one, but I never saw anything bad happen.
Trust me, I was worried about that at first also but I have never, ever felt uncomfortable there. All the dog owners I've talked to have been very nice and I can't see anyone bringing a really aggressive dog there.

I understand your concern about other dogs being aggressive. Think about this, though: With so many responsible dog owners (us) around, if a scuffle or a fight breaks out it will last only a very short time. Probably not enough time for major damage to occur. Also, if someone's dog is acting aggressive other owners have the right to ask that person to leave. If they don't leave then we can call the police to have them 'escorted' away. At Broadneck Park in Annapolis (and Quiet Waters) there have been people banned from the park. How do they enforce it? Well for one thing, the other owners certainly won't allow him/her back in the park. For another the rangers know the liscence plate #'s and keep an eye out. I'd say don't worry about it. There are chances to run into aggressive dogs all over. If you are out walking your dog one could be loose somewhere and run over to you guys...that sort of thing. At the Bash you'll have TONS of backup. Don't let it concern you enough that you don't come!!
We want everyone there!!!! (by the way, I got back on this thread late...when is it and where?)
