Park Description: Simpson Stadium is located on the east end of Alexandria at the 500 block of Monroe Avenue. The land was donated to the City in the late 1940's. It was formerly named Municipal Stadium. Two (2) baseball fields were built, restroom facilities, concession stand and storage areas. As years passed because of the need for additional softball fields and the declining participation in the sport for baseball, the large fields were converted to softball.
When participants and the need for baseball returned, the fields again were converted back into a baseball fields with state of the art renovation techniques, such as an underground sub-surface drainage system, Bermuda grass (Vamont), new fencing, backstop, bullpen, bleaches and upgraded irrigation system.
In the summer of 1996, an electronic score board was donated to the City’s Youth Baseball program, and was installed on the #2 Little League Field at Simpson Stadium. Both fields at the park are illuminated for night /evening play.
In the summer of 1998 the old playground was removed and new equipment was placed at a new location in the park. The playground is designed for children ranging from infants to young school age children. The entire play area is fenced in to keep kids safe. The playground is part of the Department’s ADOPT a Park program where the community cleans the park once a week, and reports any necessary repairs or damage to the site. The citizens are supervised by City staff which makes a monthly inspection of the site.
The playground as well as the open areas are used by the YMCA’s daily activities and the community as a whole.
The Simpson Stadium area is the first in the City to have a designated fenced in area for dogs to run. The dog exercising area is a fenced in area approximately 1485. Lf. with 5' high fencing. The Parks Division has installed security lights at this site. Simpson Stadium is the most requested site for baseball in the area. The park as well as the fields are heavily used during the spring, summer, and fall months. The baseball fields are used by the City Youth Sports program, T.C. Williams High School, Bishop Ireton High School, and occasionally used by other Adult groups. The basketball and the tennis courts are heavily used and both and will benefit from upgrades this year.
The City has worked with a master gardener in the Simpson Stadium area in collaboration with the City’s master gardener to install various types of gardens around the perimeter of the park such as Water Wise Garden, Stone Garden, and Butterfly Gardens.
