Hello Everyone,
We're a family of 4 (now 5); husband, wife, daughter (7 years), son (5 yeas). The typical. We've been wanting a dog for years and we finally had the time and means to do so. After research we decided a Boxer would be ideal. In July of this year we visited the Ventura County Animal control because they were having adoption specials. We met several dogs, unfortunately all of which were skittish and nervous and didn't seem too interested in Kids or a Family. One of the final dogs we met was a dog they named Peanut Butter. From the get-go, even when the worker was bringing him to the play area to meet us we were impressed. he walked right along side and seemed to be a happy dog. Once he was in the play area he happily walked up to my wife and stuck his big happy nose in lap and she fell in love instantly. He liked the kids and didn't seem to mind them touching his ears and leading him all around the play area. We decided this was our dog. We let them know our intention, and they said that the only thing this dog needed was a home inspection first. They scheduled it for the next Morning (Monday Morning). At about noon the person came to our place looked at the house and yard and said it would be ideal and they would let the Animal Control center know right away. So Monday at 5 we walked in ready to adopt and bring the dog home. When it was our turn in line my wife informed them we were here for Peanut Butter. The girl looked Sad and asked if she was Amber. She said yet and the girl said they had been trying to call us all afternoon, but we transposed a number in the phone number and they couldn't get though. Someone had just adopted him moments ago. She started to Cry and everyone behind the counter looked sad for her. So we decided to have a look around again. Midway through looking at the dogs the person who just adopted Peanut Butter came looking for my wife. He wanted to say he was sorry, but that he was going to a great home and that he'd take great care of the dog. She started to cry again. The man said his wife was going to kill him for making her cry and seemed a little upset too. Well lets skip an hour later. We were just waiting to meet another dog (Pit-Boxer) and the guy was in the parking lot after paying and filling out all the paperwork ready to take the dogs home (yes he adopted two). He started looking more and more upset and then he called my wife over. He said he couldn't do it and had a change of heart. He said the dogs were too wild - but I suspect he felt bad for pulling my wife and the dog apart. Sure enough he returned the dog and ask the person if they could please quickly allow my wife to adopt this Boxer. They of course agreed. Everyone behind the counter and everyone that worked at the Animal Control were talking about this and were marveling about the bond between this dog and my wife. But wait... there's More... So that very night we brought him home. He was so excited... kids and a yard... then he fainted. We were so worried. We took him to the vet and they gave us the bad news. He has the genetic heart problem that Boxers have and they said he could die at anytime and not to expect anything beyond a month or two. They also said he had terrible fleas and was 20lbs underweight. We put him on heart medication and have been giving him flea baths and the stuff you put on his back (trying not to name brands here). So last week he had a check up. We had him weighed... 62lbs!! His target weight. Also his fleas are completely gone. In fact he is in such good shape and his heart was so strong the vet said that he might actually live out his life without worries of the heart condition. We've come to this forum for help with just a few things but that will come in time. Last but not least we named him Mike Tyson after the Famous Boxer.
Hope you enjoyed the story!
