Our baby goes in tomorrow to have the mast cell removed, turned out it was stage 1 cancer. In addition she is having some x-rays to check out her right knee. Which she injured while running on the beach with me. a couple days, maybe a wek later she woke up in the morning and was almost unable to put pressure on EITHER leg... We knew it was common in knee injury's that the other one could act up but we didnt think soo quickly. Has this happened to anyones else's baby? She had even stopped limping on her right leg, to the point were we thought it could just be a sprain. She was excersized regularly as well with no issues. We contacted our vet immediatly and he plans to xray the other leg as well. Anyone else with knee injury experience that knows the difference between the 2 types of surgury's, one where they repair the ligament and the other where they put a metal plate in her leg, we would love to hear your oppinions and any pro's or cons that you can share. Depending on what the x-ray shows she could have to have surgury as quick as the following week!

Thanks,
Stephanie

I don't have any experience with the knee injury, but I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I hope that everything will be ok and we'll all be thinking about Zoey.

Wanted to let you know a common knee injury is a tear of the cranial cruciate ligament. The surgery to repair this is called, Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy or "TPLO". I researched on the internet and found alot of great sites when I thought Zach may have torn his cruciate (he didn't but I got a lot of information, explanations and even some pictures). Good luck with Zoey!

My dog Kobi has just been to see the ortho-specialist and he spent over 45 minutes with me explaining ever inch of that dogs leg.

Kobi is very bow-legged and has a few things going on. The ligament over the knee cap doesn't line up as it should & can't hold the knee cap in place. Doc says he probably did something playing that stretched the ligament so out of place it can't heel b/c the knee cap is constantly slipping. Says it was only a matter of time till it happened b/c of the way his bones are out of alignment.

The surgery can include 3 parts:
1. detachment of the ligament over the kneecap & pinning back into a location that allows for proper alignment
2. shaving down the bone on one side of the lower bone to allow the 2 bones to come together in a better fit
3. deepening the grooves in the area of bone where the patella (knee cap) rests

He says the best bet is to get into the knee & see exactly what needs to be done, but the cost of the surgery (1500$) covers everything.

He also said that the next thing to happen could POSSIBLY be that he could tear the ACL b/c the whole structure of the knee is compromised. Says allowing the current injury to remain unaddressed could cause the tear of the ACL.

Additionally, if the dog is a larger breed and likely has the genetic defect in both knees, the second knee can be injured as a result of the dog favoring the unhurt knee b/c they aren't using the other leg.

Says 98% of all dogs who have this surgery heal and are good as new. It is a 6 week recovery period of being confined to the house & limited leash walking.

He says I caught it early enought so no permanent damage, but that he can hear grinding in the bones b/c cartiledge was starting to wear.

Of course I have concerns about my baby "going under the knife", but I have done lots of homework & gotten 2 opinions & feel like I am making the choice that gives him the best chance of many pain-free years to come.

We go in for surgery on May 1 & I am ready to help my child get back to 100%.

Good luck with your pup & I hope it just turns out to be something simple. Let us know what it turns out to be & if I can help with any additional info, I certainly will!!!
