Zits???

Afternoon all.

Rooney has what looks like zits on his chin. Does he have a little "acne" or could it be something else? He's almost 6 months old now.

Dogs can just have puppy acne, or they can get them from an allergy, like grass or plastic food bowls (actually I think it is recommended never to use plastic for daily feeding as they can develope and allergy over time).

Bindi gets acne on her chin. Some of them are actually little ingrown hairs. If they get really big, we just squeeze them gently and usually if it's an ingrown hair it will just pop out and it'll heal up just fine.

Piston gets it on her belly and near her private area. I just use a little peroxide and/or a stridex pad and it goes away in a day. I've noticed the peroxide works better.

Acne

Jake had this problem on his upper lip. We changed the food and water bowls to ceramic and while his lips were acutely inflamed, I would put a warm compress on his mouth after meals and make sure his mouth was clean. It worked out really well. He has a bit of scarring where two of the bigger lesions were but is all clear now.

I should have put this in my earlier post, but food around the mouth can also cause acne. Wiping it off after meals usually does the trick.

nskiddo21 also posted about peroxide. This shouldn't actually be used except on fresh punture wounds where you need the bubbles to bring trapped dirt or debris to the surface. Peroxide interferes with new cell growth amd slows down healing.
