Your opinion on doggy coats

I was at a Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine,TX last year and I saw a neat dog jacket. It came in orange or camoflauge, made of neoprene, water resistant, and had a handle on top.(for pulling hunting dogs out of the water) It also doubled as a flotation device and the neoprene is an excellent insulator.

My husband and I say this all the time. I thought it was sooo funny the first time I heard it!!!

P.S. I too am against the coats of dog.

I am not, I am all for coats of dog. If anyone hear remembers the pilot for the TV show that came out last year,"Andy Richter controls the Universe" you know why ;)

One morning when the title character enters his job he is feeling all warm, fuzzy and happy. To show it, he has a descriptive sequence where he has all puppies on his coat. They just hung on him, out of pockets and on his shoulders. It was so darn cool and looked like A LOT of fun in my book ;)

In seriousness, just this evening my wife and I realized we would be buying multiple coats this winter. Here in Wisconsin it gets down right frigid outside. Just like a growing skin kid, the rate Jedi is growing, we will have to buy more then one just to keep him in a coat he fits this winter. Time to hope for sales again!

Boxer don't really grow a *winter* coat. They'll get a bit more hair, but since it's virtually all guard hairs, it's not insulating. If you look, you'll see that they don't have an under coat (a winter dog has 2 fur types- guard hairs and a soft fluffier undercoat to trap heat.)

I buy interesting coats on sale, and also make my own. You can buy dog coat patterns or make one that is just like a horse blanket only mini size. You measure from collar to tail, then center chest around the side to point of butt, then how deep you want the coat to be. Stitch it together at the chest, add a velcro belly band and you're done.

As for fitting store brands: I find most sweaters don't fit boxers well, being too tight in the chest and putting pressure under the arm pits. To get one that fits the chest, you end up with one too big in the waist (which you can take in with a tuck on the sewing machine.) Same for Jackets.

I can never keep booties on the dogs. They have small tight feet and the booties just fly right off. When mine get cold feet, they start holding them up; then it's time to go inside (although they are cold, they usually want to stay out still. ):p
