Marisa, thanks for the link... What a long, hairy nose on that dog!

I was browsing that webpage and they have a list of "Hybrid dogs", with photos: they all look like mutts, but with extravagant names! "Affen Tzu"... "Broodle Griffon"... "Cherokee Monarch"... I absolutely disagree with the trend, but the names they give those poor dogs sure crack me up!

How could someone seriously buy a "Cock-A-Chon" or a "Jack-A-Poo"?

I'm curious to see just how many of todays expensive "designer" dogs do end up at the shelters and how the shelters will post the descriptions......

Scarlet, I agree with you that the Boxer comes from a lot of mixes to bring out certain qualities in the dog, and that all purebred breeds were created that way. But the "designer" BYBs don't seem to mix animals in a tradition to improve a dog with specific qualities (except maybe, let's say, the Poodle mixes to get a dog that doesn't shed...). I may be wrong, but I have the impression that BYBs mix anything with anything for no specific reasons, do not check health of either parents and sell the results for profit only. With all those "fancy" mixes out there, it's hard to believe they are really trying to create ONE better dog.

The animals seem to be a "unpredictable random product" rather than an effort to create a specific animal with specific qualities (while also making sure the puppies are healthy).

Maybe this trend will, in fact, create new "purebred" breeds; but I do hope the breeders will take the dogs' health in consideration and carefully create a breed standard that shall be respected.

Most of todays recognised breeds were bred for a specific working purpose....unfortunately,these designer "breeds" are being bred as living "toys".Hopefully, these "toys" won't be discarded as the novelty wears off .......just my 2 cents worth.

But to be fair, you probably can't say all the animals you've ever had, you got for the specific reasons they were breed for (did that sentence make any sense? :p ) And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just the way our society has changed. But again, I'm with you, I hope people aren't going to just turn around and toss these poor animals in the pound.

I totally agree with you, most people don't get a specific breed for what they were bred to do (for example, I had a Brittany Spaniel for 13 years and never took her hunting!), but people do get specific breeds for their general characteristics (temperament, shedding, size, etc). So even if I didn't take my dog hunting, I had a good idea she would eventually chase birds all the time (which she did , crazy girl), be about 35 pounds, and a good family pet...

The problem with "designer" dogs is, they randomly get the parents' characteristics, and it is usually impossible to tell what the cute puppy will become when growing up. And that is the scary part, because if an ignorant dog owner buys a "Labradoodle" hoping it won't shed, and it finally does... What will they do? Probably get rid of the designer dog and get, let's say, a shedding-proof Poodle (which they should've done in the beginning if a non-shedding dog was their original goal).

This is why it makes me sad :(

I got to see a "Designer Dog" issue today at the store. I had to thumb through it, due to curiosity. There was even a warning about what to look for in a breeder!! The irony of it all. An example was someone who breeds multiple breeds- and they are doing what? - Breeding dogs with names that will go cute together. It's like the hollywood trend of giving couples cutsey nicknames. Gag me. There are all sorts of designer dogs at the pound that people have not even heard of yet! :) :) I didn't get my boxers from the pound ( I will rescue next time), but we have always gotten our cats there and I got my pointer from the pound. This whole trend has got to stop. Does Paris even have Tinkerbell any more? What Tink? I'm onto Greek shipping heirs now. That's hot!

I guess they're talking about the sketches you do when you're bored. I amuse myself, but seriously, I saw that today too. And I too was like WTF? Since when are there "designer dogs"? I was talking about this subject the other day with my boss who breeds Golden Retrievers, people will breed anything to make a new trend, or a quick buck. Just my thoughts.

My boyfriend and I were on dogbreedinfo.com one time just to see all the "new breeds" so we thought up a great name-game to play (of course, totally making fun of it all). "What do you get when you cross a...." for instance, our favorite is a shitzu and a poodle (take the first syllable of each name and combine). HAHAHA, as you can see, we had great fun for hours with this. I was crying I was laughing so hard by the time we were done.

Then again, this must just prove our maturity levels - it's like reverting back to the preteen years when making someone say a "bad word" was great fun.

We actually have friends that bought 2 "designer" shih tzu/poodle mixes. We went over to see them and DH actually called them the name I think you are referring to and asked if that's what they were called. Boy did they get mad!!! They said "they are called shih-poos!" Even though he was corrected, he still calls them that...b/c like you said, reverting back and saying bad words is funny!

Boxer-doodles?!? No wayyyyyy... I couldn't believe it so I had to Google it, and I found a webpage that says : Find purebred Boxerdoodle puppies... Boxerdoodle : Dog breed information... etc.

I can't believe some people actually think an unfortunate mix between a Poodle and a Boxer could be called "purebred". This trend is scary!

I just saw is also. I cannot believe it. At least the website I saw did acknowledge that these are not purebreed dogs but mixed. I guess very expensive mutts.
