My 4 month old boxer, Tyson, is a pee pee machine! I think he is getting the hang of the outside thing slowly but surely but still goes in the house. I have another dog, Rocky a Jack Russell, as well. I am just shocked at how often the boxer goes to the bathroom. Now down to the point...Im curious how other people training monitor their puppies water intake during the day. What time do you cut him off at night? Do you limit the amount of water they have per day?

Well I hate to say it but im glad im not the only one with this problem. I have a 13 week old male boxer who goes in the house ALL THE TIME! He will go outside when we put him out, but then he goes in the house again, sometimes just a small squirt. What can be done to fix this problem, it is wreaking havoc on my carpet, and nerves. my billy pees in the crate all the time!

yes it is small enough and yes he is being let out every four hours!!! the vet told me that to take the bedding out! it breaks my heart to do that. i just dont think i can. i had him checked out for a uti. he is ok.
he pees in the house all the time as soon as i take my eyes off him. yet he goes outside. but has to go every twenty minutes! my billy is so smart with everything else but not this! he thinks he is king tut and can pee anywhere he wants....:) are male dogs harder to housebreak? billy is about four months old.

They really don't get the potty outside thing fully till around 7mos. If they are going in the house my advise would be to watch for signs they need to go. Like sniffing, going to the door. You may need to tie them to you with a leash to make sure you don't miss the signs.

Be consistant and they will finally get it.

I remember this! and I thougth Shaemus would NEVER STOP.. but guess what they do! But during this time it will make you crazy. Don't take it personally. Maxwell's mom is right.. keep an eye on him for a while and see if you can read his body language. The pup needs to know how to let you know they have to go out. At this age it hasn't really occured to them.
The bell training worked for us, and we took away his water at 7 pm an let him out last time at 10 pm. Now he comes and finds me at night when he has to go out.

AutumnMae.. I know it sounds silly.. .but now that it's getting nicer out..
(this is so silly) But maybe you could run water while he is outside? (stop laughing :) it works with kids....) Or... take him out and instead of standing there waiting for him to pee.. run him a little... in circles or back and forth. Most of the time Shae and his friends have to stop and pee after some hard playing. Maybe try it?

Touzy,

I almost peed my pants with the running water thing. Too funny! It might work but the image I got was absolutely hilarious. You crack me up.

i have monitored the amount of water Roxy gets since we got her at 7 weeks. We give her about a half cup at a time, after she goes pee, she can have more. That way it's easier for us to tell when she has to pee, rather than filling her water bowl to the top and having her casually drink. (I actually tried that the other night and she was peeing everywhere in the house!)

Signs they have to go out: sudden disintrest in an activity, immediately after they wake up (even if they're only asleep for 5 minutes).

Don't give them the opportunity to go in the house. Bring them outside every 10 minutes if you have to. That's what we did in the beginning because we just got sick of cleaning up puppy puddles!! Then when they do pee outside throw a party!!! You cannot praise them enough!!

When Roxy was a tiny pup and we'd take her outside to pee. When she finally would go we'd say, Calmly to her, "good pee, roxy." Then when she was done we'd freak out, loving on her, praising her, etc.

Be consistent, but the best thing i can say, is don't give them the opportunity to go in the house. Take them out every 5-10 minutes, eventually they'll get it. They'll still have accidents, but they won't be as frequent.

thanks for the advice

hahhaah the running watrer thing is funny:) billy does seem to be getting better. i suppose the only thing we can do is take it day by day. it is very frustrating but i know this time when billy is small and can fit on my lap will be short and soon he will be a big dog that will still sit on my lap. i know the day will came when he is house trained and he will be a big boy but for now my little king who is snoring away like a little angel will prob pee in the house very soon. little monster!!!
